    Hi,
    Whats your PC spec ?
Most of PCs in last 5-6 yrs have SoftRaid.

RAID Cards are uncommon now-a-days and are costly.

You might be better of buying likes of HP Microserver N54L as its about the same money. There is whole thread dedicated to that box

Ive seen those but what is the advantage of soft raid to hard raid? I was always under the illusion that hardware was the way to go?

Im open to a server motherboard with soft raid could you recommend any

If you spend a lot of money you can get a RAID card with a battery backup and its own memory, this allows for it to flush data upon unexpected power loss, and typically gives better IO in large arrays. But you're talking big bucks.

If these are questions you have to ask, then the integrated SATA controller on you mobo should handle the duties you'll give it just fine. If you're worried just hook the machine up to a UPS.

IIRC hardware raid is 'hardware dependent' == if the raid card goes down then the raid must be recovered with a similar/duplicate card as the data cannot be otherwise easily accessed.
Software raid does not have this limitation.

I guess it depends on the application ..... for a mission critical server maybe running other services a hardware raid set up would be the norm .... the raid card takes the RAID load off the CPU.

This might help you decide which is for you
