Engine replacement question

    Hi
I bought a 08 citroen c4 grand picasso from a garage in February. Got it home and noticed an oil leak in it so brought it back as I got a 3 month warranty with it. They said no problem they'd fix it. While it was there they decided to remove the dpf from it and while trying it out, got dirt in the injection pump and that in turn wrecked the pistons. They needed to replace the whole engine as it was cheaper. They said they bought a 09 engine with 60000km on the clock to replace the 08 with 139000km. They also replaced the clutch. Got the car back nearly 3 weeks later and a day later the car wouldn't start....now there was an electrical fault. Few days later they rang to say car was ready...went out to collect it and the car wouldn't start....this time immobiliser had locked as they dropped the key. It seems to be 1 fault after another but my question is should I accept this car now(will it ever be the same as it was with a newer engine) and ask for a 15 month warranty free or just look for a new car which I'll only have a 3 month warranty with? Any help would be appreciated. TIA

The seller is entitled to try to rectify the problems but tbh now it sounds like you should try to get a full refund.

I'll do that so. Was hoping someone would say the car would be grand now all the work had been done. Thanks

It may well be fine now for all we know. At the end of the day it comes down to if you feel it will be ok now, and if the seller will accept to do a refund or if they want to keep fixing things.

They sound the opposite to me - they tried to fix the faults and put in a better engine.what bit was "chancery" -..citroen/psa immobilisers are a notorious pita at the best of times. I feel sorry for the dealer...that's one car he's losing his hole on..

Chancers is probably the wrong word, hapless would be more like it. The dealer managed to total the engine on a car left in with them to fix an oil leak. Of course that might of just been unlucky, but given what happened when they attempted a relatively simple repair how could you trust that the engine and clutch replacement was done properly.

Thanks guys. They have been very unfortunate alright. They had a learner mechanic working on it to test it out after dpf removal and he wrecked the engine by letting the dirt into the injection pump. They then put the proper mechanic on it after that so lesson learned I think. Will the car run properly with an engine in it that wasn't originally in it? I know it was in another citroen, exactly the same car just a year younger, but my husband seems to think that because the engine wasn't originally in that car it can't.

I'd be inclined to keep the car but demand a 12 month warranty for any engine or electrical problems that may develop with the car/engine. If they're willing to provide that then I'd be happy. If they insist on only 3 months then ask for a full refund (although there is no guarantee you'll get one as they have fixed or replaced everything that went wrong)

To the poster that said they sound like chancers, I think your very wrong, they sound like a honourable bunch, they made mistakes and repaired/replaced parts without quibble. Many dealers try and get away with doing as little as possible and as cheap as possible.

I'm no mechanic so I'm a little confused about how removing dpf from exhaust system would introduce dirt to "injection pump" - fuel injectors or fuel pump?

If they were an honourable bunch they wouldnt be telling lies to the customer claiming that dirt got into the fuel pump and wrecked the pistons that is impossible.

I haven't a clue how dirt got in it. That's what I was told by them. So that's impossible then?

    It wouldnt.
I would be asking the question why they took the dpf off in the first place what happens the Op when it becomes part of an nct test to have who is going to pay to reverse the damage they have done.

Sounds like they had an apprentice working on it and he timed the engine wrong.

They cleaned out the inside of the dpf and replaced the empty dpf? I think that's what he said. He said it was all clogged up and it would need replacing in less than a year and that would cost around €1500 so they were doing it to be nice and so I wouldn't have problems and big costs further down the line. They said because the dpf shell was still there it would pass the nct

Still none the wiser here how dirt got anywhere except the yard or a bucket. Unless they left engine side of dpf connected and powerwashed crap back into engine, at which stage youd have to wonder were they wearing red noses, wigs and overly large shoes.

Thanks guys. Still no idea what I'll do. I'll go have a chat with the garage tomorrow. Thanks
