Raising funds for charity?

Im interested in doing a parachute jump for charity.I looked it up on skydive4charity and it says the minimum to raise is 450euro with 200 going to the charity and 250 to pay for the jump itself.

Has anyone any experience raising funds like this? What are some methods to get funds, can i stand outside Dunnes with a sponsor card or do you need permission for something like that?

Also, does anyone know if you can get your own online charity pages to raise funds with this company? And if so, can i link to it here on boards?

I have no experience doing anything like this so any help or advice is appreciated, thanks.

    Oh Jesus.

Not another person who wants to do a parachute jump getting others to pay for it.

Not as bad as the fellow who wanted money from me for cycling around the North of Italy "for charity" ie. a dream holiday.

Sure why don't you just give money to one of the many many many many reputable charities set-up here ?

Just pay for the jump yourself, or donate to charity.

Piss off with your oh I'm jumping out of plane for charity, think of the children. What does jumping out of a plane have to do with charity?

I dont happen to have 250 euro to hand to the charity at the moment.Do you?
Because if its that easy maybe you could just give me 250 right now and save me collecting that much?

Yes, i want to do a sponsored jump for Console Ireland, a suicide charity.A charity that has become very important to me actually.

Then just raise the money for it and give it to them? Don't see what jumping out of a plane does?

People sponsor the jump and the money goes to charity.Thats what it has to do with charity.Pretty self explanatory really.

Well it does add money to the amount of money he/she need's to collect to fund the jump and the donation.

Why don't you do a sponsored walk or cycle or something that doesn't cost half (or more) of the money you want to raise so that this charity that is so important to you personally can actually get more money?

I just asked about how to do that and you went out of your way trying to find a problem with it.

I have never done that or anything I have just given the money or volunteered but every bit helps.

You fundraise 450 and the charity gets 200 I looked it up on their site. I think you can set up your own sponsorship page. I don't know about linking on boards.

If you set it up and it's all pukka and above boards I would sponsor you.

Collect for something that doesn't cost anything, like a ten mile run or something. Always loads of them on around.

Hmmm, a cynic might say not only are you using suicide (a charity important to pretty much most of the island) to get a parachute jump, but also to make a point here.

Will you tell people that over half the money is spent on your fun? I guess if they pay up after that, it's their call.

How do i go about it?I just saw the skydive one advertised by Console on facebook and thought it would be handy. Would people sponsor a single man walk?Arent those things usually done in groups?

    Bucket local supermarket.

So less than half the money goes to charity... Well that's pretty crap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 156 ✭✭Depraved

I work with charities in SE Asia. Raising money is hard...and quite frankly it doesn't matter how it was raised. So if the OP jumping out of a plane has the final result of raising cash for a charity, then that's just great....go for it!

P.S. I'm about to start a fundraising campaign to help a young homeless kid with a cleft lip/palate get corrective surgery. If you want to throw some of that money raised our way, it would be appreciated!

Well I would say it's more than the many many many charities we have here. Admin fancy CEO's and all that don't come cheep.

There are fun runs, etc happening all the time (google them for your area) where all types of fitness are catered for. If you are a bit fitter then you can enter a 10k or something. If you do them regularly anyhow then choose something you don't normally do such as a bigger distance or a cycle. Here is a link to officially organised social cycling events, I'm sure you can find something in there.

Thank you Depraved and 5starpool for the sincere replies.I dont even have a bicycle though!

If anyone on here has done the jump and can give me some idea of how hard it is to raise the money, please let me know.

I'm sure you can see cynical point of view if someone asks for money for a charity and gives a chunk of it for a good day out.

Sure why don't you just give money to one of the many many many many reputable charities set-up here ?

Sure you could raise 450 and just give it to a charity but thats no fun. I always make sure that the person collecting money plans on doing something pointless that doesnt add anything at all before I would ever think of handing over any money.

No half of the money is spend on making money for the helicopter company.

True giving half the money to the person collecting the money for a charity to interrupt their day and jump out of a plane for no good reason seems like a win win for the charity.

    Now that's a valid one.

Unlike the OP you are putting your health on the line. It's not just fun, there will be suffering between opening hours.

    Where can I give generously?

Only if it's only 450 they raise. If they raise more, it'll be a greater percentage going to charity obviously.

Very disrespectful to say you are collecting for suicide awareness and then plunge from a plane.

But they only need to collect 450 so he can pay for the sky dive and donate why would you collect more seems a lot of hard work. As the sky dive seems the most important aspect.

Do you need some kind of special permission for that?
You get a permit from the gardaí if you want to fundraise publicly but if you contact some charities they already have pre obtained permits but they don't give them out to everyone they often go through their volunteer networks.

However if you do it on church grounds you don't need a permit .

    http://www.ictr.ie/files/Garda%20Permits%20Good%20Practice_web.pdf
An application for a collection permit must be made in writing in the prescribed form to the Garda
Division that is local to the proposed collection. Garda permits are handled by the Garda Division
    rather than local Garda stations.
The permit must be sought from the Chief Superintendent of the Garda Division which has jurisdiction
over the place of collection i.e. a permit for a collection being carried out in O’Connell Street, Dublin
must be sought from the Garda North Central Division, Store Street Garda Station.

Why? He is clearly using this as a vehicle to get a free skydive.

Jumping out of a plane certainly isnt a health risk sure.

Not really much risk attached at all tbh. Very safe thing to do. More dangerous health risks doing lots of every day things such as crossing the road.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 216 ✭✭theboy1

What are you basing this on?

You are gonna take 200 euro off people that is directly funding you jumping off a plane.

Crossing the road with a parachute would be particularly dangerous.
