2/kg in reality at that weight and age there should be no difference between mart and farm price. But you need to be accurate with your weights. I haerd taht such cattle are making 2.1/kg at present or 50 with double there weight

You have to allow for the difference between mart and fresh weight

Only when buying. Fresh weight is ok when selling!

Yes but if you are selling out of a yard there is no pint in quoting an unrealistic price over the phone. If I ring and price is not realistic I will not call to see cattle. In there mind I am a time waster. If a lad comes and offers a realistic price seller should be willing to allow for mart fees and transport IMO.

So in pat73's case what is a realistic if such cattle are making 2/kg. He says they are 600kgs which is about 570 mart weight so 1140 less 20 for transport and mart fees leaves a price of 1120. If he is deals at more well and good if not then 1120 is a realistic base to work off. So what should he ask as a starting price if he asks 1200 he may scare off buyers if he says they are 600kgs and he has weighted them and loos for 1170 buyers know he is being realistic.

Would they loose 30kg between the yard and the mart?

A kg is the weight of a litre of water. Maybe not off a dry diet but they would loose it off grass or out of a shed off a high input diet IMO. It is only 5% of body weight on a 600kg animal.

    Rough ballpark 1150-1250 I suppose.

I was in Nenagh mart for a quick look this morning. Even though it's my local mart I hadn't been in it for at least 12 months. The quality on offer was in my opinion absolutely sh1te. I reckon in the whole mart there was only one lot of cattle that might have an R grade animal in it.

Is it like this in other areas too, or is it just like this in strong dairy areas?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Would that be lads under pressure selling the worst of their stock for smaller money and able to feed the good ones better, and a few bob coming in too?

the buyers for top coloured cattle have stopped coming to nenagh for some time 'cos of the poor quality & lack of numbers

as a result what good cattle were coming there are now going elsewhere, mainly roscrea, ennis, and possibly thurles,

No that was back in January when no talk of a crisis. It's just a reflection of the cattle that are dairy influence.

You could get €2 a kg for the fr when the sun starts shining less if they are extreme Holstein.

Some lads selling Fr yearling on DD are deluded rang a few 350kgs looking for 750 euro. Lads are the same with HE and AA looking for 4-500 with there weight for yearling around the 300kg mark. I will but them in the autumn 150kgs heavier for that or another 50 euro with it.
