I know there have been references to the passing of George Byrne on other forums such as Films and After Hours, but it is worth a mention in this forum too.

George passed away on the 2nd of April last Thursday. He was not only a very well informed music critic/journalist, a former musician, massive Shamrock Rovers fan and question setter for "Blackboard Jungle", but a significant radio presence.

I particularly remember him, as regards radio, as a regular contributor between 1997 and 1998 on "The Sunday Supplement" on Radio Ireland/Today FM. He had very definite views about many things including music, soccer and politics. He was always interesting to listen to and not afraid to be controversial. He claimed to be a Glasgow Rangers fan as well as Shamrock Rovers and Chelsea!!

In more recent times, George was a film critic on Tom Dunne's nighttime show on Newstalk. Unfortunately, I only heard him a couple of times on that.

Any more radio observations on what will be a significant loss?

    R.I.P. George Byrne

Thanks for the heads up. I listened back to the tribute podcast for Tom 's show and it was Fionn Davenport who was on air that night.

george used to slag off celtic for their pro-ira chanting, yet some of the rovers supporters have the same bigoted mindset

I can tell you that "some" supports of most clubs are pro IRA. And a piece on a website blaming fans for trouble is hardly enough to call them the Irish equivlent.

Have you been to any games in Northern Ireland ? Have you been to any of the Setanta Cup games between Northern Ireland teams and Irish teams.......you want to see bigots, go to some of those games and listen to the chants.

Celtic aren't Irish, have never been Irish and will never be Irish. I too can't stand them with their bigoted fans.

BUT Glasgow as a city is unique outside Ireland for its level of sectarian voilence and hatred.
