I read the sticky but didn't see anything on the following....My insurance is up soon on my current vehicle. I am looking to trade up to another car (we are talking 3.5k car to a 6.5k car and engines from a 1.4 to a 1.6 petrol probably). My question is how much does it usually cost to transfer a policy permanently? Anyone have any experience of doing this? I just don't want to insure my current car and get stung when i go to transfer it. Cheers

    It varies between Companies.
Your best bet is to phone them and ask for a quote to transfer to your 'new' car. Just find the same year and model on carzone.ie and use the reg off that to get a quote.
If you current insurance is due for renewal within 30 days they should be able to quote you for changing from your current expiry date....that will give you the cost for a full year, so you will be able to see exactly how much more expensive the newer car will be.

On top of that some companies charge an administration fee some don't. RSA (123.ie) for example wants €40.00 to have car changed in system and send you out a 2 cents worth piece of paper but FBD won't charge anything.

It might cost and it might not. The only people who can say with any degree of certainty are your insurers. Ask them.

Alot of insurance companies work off a Ryan Air type business model where they can offer cheaper premiums but make more money by charging for administration or add on services.

    Some don't though.

My new car is due anytime now, and the policy is up for renewal tomorrow. Permanent subs are always free, and the extra premium for the Fiesta ST is a mere €45 p.a.

Renewal is €400 for comp. Aviva through a good broker.

I'm a "model risk" though apparently.
