hi, my aunt worked and lived in Enniskillen for 40 years. She always had a Northern reg car. She then moved back to Sligo and brought car with her. She now wants to buy a new car and is going to get Southern reg as she lives in Sligo. So what I want to know is should she VRT the car herself or trade in to garage with northern reg.
Just to give extra info car is 2011 VW Golf Plus with 36k miles.

If she lived for the previous 6 months in the UK and can prove it then she can VRT it for free. No garage will want the hassle of VRT'ing the car of it they do they will factor in a big discount on the price they offer for her car.

does it have to be previous 6? if she is in ireland now for 2 years does this mean the window has passed?

Yes she will have to pay to VRT it and will also be liable for fines if she says it entered the state 2 years ago. Car is supposed to be booked for VRT 7 days after entering the state.

    As said:
You must book your appointment with the NCTS within 7 days of the vehicle entering the State and have completed the registration within 30 days of the vehicle entering the State.
She should have had it transferred to Irish plates when she moved across the border.
Now I suppose the best option is to sell it in NI and buy an Irish car here.

Or trade it in in NI and pay VRT on the new car.

Drivers of unregistered cars are now facing the prospect of them being seized by Revenue and held until they have paid the VRT and fines of up to €5,000.
The Revenue would not say if it was planning to offer any incentive -- such as lower fines and penalties -- to drivers of unregistered cars to come forward before they are detected.

In one court recently, three women were each fined €2,500 for the offence.

If she was to drive up to the north and sell you the car on the border and write you a receipt then you can VRT it without a fine and then trade it in.
