Is it possible to get decent reception of BBC Radio 5 on radio, without the use of internet just through normal radio?

Depends where you are , reception on 693 or 909 MW should be fairly good in border areas or the east coast!

Generally good in the evening but forget it in the morning based on my experience in the Southeast

Also, it is free to air over here on satellite

I know this isn't a viable alternative for the car but if you have free sat or sky at home it is easy to get.

I managed to get BBC Five Live for Blackburn-Liverpool. Seems more difficult earlier in the morning. Anyone know what Newstalk and Today FM Premier League coverage is like. The Commentators are actually at the games like BBC? any help would be appreciated as this info is important for work purposes. BBC Five Live coverage is like 5 seconds quicker than TV(BT Sport) if anyone as any interest.

I'm in Waterford and its pretty much impossible, since I got Freesat that's how I listen (Talksport also do commentaries)

The bottom line is this: you need to tune three buttons on your car radio to 693, 909 and 990 KHz. At any given time you need to try all of them and pick the one with the best signal.

The 990 KHz signal is from Wales so you'd probably need to be on the east coast to pick it up as it's not as powerful a signal as 693 and 909 - see below.

The really powerful transmitters are Moorside Edge (between Huddersfield and Manchester) which transmits 693 KHz and is rated at 200 kW. The transmitter at Droitwich (25 kms SW of Birmingham) pumps out 150 kW on 693 KHz. There's no other transmitter close to the Irish Sea that's rated at better than 50 kW.

Much closer to us but at only 1 kW is Tywyn on Cardigan Bay (i.e. the Irish Sea) on the west coast of Wales, that's the one transmitting on 990 KHz and some days it comes in very clear. If you were up near the border you'd probably get a good signal on 909 from Lisnagarvey near Lisburn, it's rated at 10 kW.

If you're using a kitchen or portable radio at home, it will use an internal antenna which is a long bar, you may need to swivel the radio to get the best signal. The best way to do this is to swivel the radio until the signal goes very weak, then turn it through 90 degrees, that way the antenna will be getting the best signal.

Checked nighttime reception of a few stations a few minutes ago on caradio, Talksport's programme audio on 1089kHz suffering annoying echoing effects, due to audio timing differences on some 1089kHz transmitter(s).

It isn't just going to affect listeners outside the UK.

Is it because of the push to DAB there is this sloppiness with the AM network?

Put roughly the signal is carried on the ionosphere which is strongest in darkness for AM frequencies

Crystal clear reception from my Free To Air satellite dish - FTA TV/Radio receiver.

I also have the BBC media app on my smart phone, so I get any of the BBC radio stations anytime I want, nice :)

I can also get Five Live in the car on the AM waveband.

Once you open I-Tunes to play your music there should be a tab across the top line which says internet. I have in order of appearance SONGS, ALBUMS, ARTISTS, GENRE, PLAYLISTS, INTERNET & MATCH. Click on INTERNET and it gives you a zillion options for music stations according to genre. Then click on NEWS/TALK RADIO and its in alphabetical order as you scroll down.

.. and football coverage, etc, on 5 Live is blocked outside UK.
Free To Air Satellite is the way to go. Perfect reception and nothing blocked.
MW in the car, for me, is unreliable. I have a 09 car but MW is very temperamental. It works sometimes. Probably due to the antenna being built in to window so less effective in certain types of weather.
