How do I say as gaeilge: 'He started playing chess'. Is it: 'thosaigh se ag imirt ficheall'. Thanks ;)

Pretty close. Whenever you use the Ainm Briathra ("ag") then the thing being done/affected goes into the Tuiseal Ginideach.

In this case, "ag imirt fichille".
