Advice on buying

    Hey all.

I'm hoping to upgrade my car in the near future as my 2001 Punto is on its last legs. Looking for advice before I start the hunt.

I haven't got a particular price in mind - or make/model - at the minute, but I know I'd like to get something that brings me into the newer tax bands for road tax (I'm currently paying €400 per year so would be nice to get something cheaper than that... and cheaper to run too if possible).

Is there any easy way for me to identify cars that are going to fit that bill, bar me ringing and asking the seller? My assumption would be that smaller petrol engines and diesel cars are more likely to fall into the 'A' band, but I'd imagine it's not as straight-forward as that.

    Thanks in advance.

People focus too much on motor tax and forget about the thousands they are paying out in order to get a car with cheap tax. I know your buying a new car anyway but my point is do the maths and take all costs into account including the purchase price compared to the savings in motor tax.

For example - buying a 08 car for €9000 with motor tax of €200 versus buying a similar 07 car for €7000 with motor tax of €400. So in order to save €200 annually on motor tax it is costing you an extra €2000 which means it would take you 10 years for the cheaper motor tax to repay itself.

Fair point - though if I'm buying something that's under the old tax system it would likely put me off a lot of larger engined cars due to the higher rate... so by looking at ones taxed by Co2 I can afford to broaden my horizons a little.

As long as you are aware that they will still cost more to buy. General rule of thumb is that cars that cost more to tax tend to cost less to buy and vice versa.

I am, thanks. I'm also trying to weigh up the impact on insurance... based on a quote for a 2008 2l diesel I'll not be getting anything too much bigger than what I already have!
