Re-marking ball on fairway rules query

    Today...
Played my approach long and through a par 5 green, one of my playing partners about two foot off the front of the green with flag about four feet on.
With clean and place on the fairway he marked, removed and replaced his ball by the time I had reached my ball. I take a 7 iron and with the green sloping away from me, my ball rolls off the front.
My ball ended up about two feet to the right of playing partner's ball and about 4/5 inches further from the flag, I fully expected your man to take his shot as a) I had to walk around the green which would take a while and then mark/clean/replace etc and b) I would have been very close to standing on his marker.
He calmly marked his ball again, pocketed it and asked me to play as I was away.

What's the story on re-marking, I would have thought once ball is back in play then that's it and you've had your clean/replace option extinguished, interested in your thoughts...

If you mark, pick up your ball, clean it then place it and remove the marker the ball is now "in play" and cannot be touched again

    Although.....

If a ball interferes with your shot the ball can be marked, picked up and held with two fingers(no cleaning) then replaced exactly as was lying after you have taken your shot.

I agree with both your points but given the scenario of ball positions I really didn't think my ball interfered with his stance, swing or line. I hadn't played with the guy before today but he stringently kept to order of play regardless of speeding things up and as he said to me the reason he marked was I was away....dodgy one...I did not ask for him to mark his ball, he just did it without asking

He wants to just get on with playing the game first of all!
Only reason to wait there is if it was a match. But yeah as stated above if his ball would interfere with your shot he can mark and replace as stated above

Yeah, I suppose, being honest with two right handed players and balls positioned like that I've never been asked to play first, it's sort of unwritten that when so close the guy with the completely free stance just gets on with it.
Good to know the rule though...
