Honda Accord cracked manifold

I have a near 10 year old Honda accord cdti and for the last couple of months I am getting the dreaded exhaust smell through the vents when stationary. Everything online suggests this is the common cracked manifold problem. On the very slim chance it was a leaking injector, as suggested in some places online, I took off the engine cover and the injectors are clean.

I am outside the free repair through honda. I checked it out and they told me I wouldn't be covered given the cars age and mileage.

My question is what are my options for repair?

I have no intention of main dealer prices given the cars age.

The new type manifold itself, as honda parts tend to be, is expensive circa €300 from the UK before labour. Is welding the old one an option? If so, can the crack be welded in-situ or does it need to come off for the job?

I've read the typeaccord forum and I see there are companies in the UK that do the job at reasonably cost if honda aren't covering it. Anyone any recommendations in the munster area that could do it relatively cheap / quickly? Anyone of experiences of the problem overall?

Aside from this it has been a relatively trouble free motor and a pleasure to drive in the couple of years I've owned it. :(

Best to buy a new manifold/new type and go from there. I have had 3 of those manifolds, all cracked in different places. Cast rods aren't cheap either. They are a disaster!

They are an absolute wanker to replace too :(

How can you find out if your manifold is cracked?
Does this fault affect 09 civic facelift model?

No need to look. You'll smell it. Mainly 04-08 accord diesel affected

I smell diesel sometimes after morning start, but I thought it was due to wind blowing it from exhaust into direction of air vents intake.
But not I'm not sure anymore, so I'd like to take a look.

Are you definitely unable to get it covered by Honda. I rem my bro had same issue and Honda IRL were gonna charge him but the Honda garage near Dungannon fixed it for nothing. Ring them up with VIN. You never know

I don't even know if my manifold is cracked.
I wasn't even thinking about trying to find someone who will do it for free at this stage.

Honda covered the chain up to 7 yrs old and <125,000 miles(201,000 KM,s) which was generous by recent standards (BMW looking at you) I think the manifold was the same. As the most recent of that model is 2008 I'd say they are all out of warranty now.

Two of the biggest design faults with that engine were the chains and manifold.
I've had the chains replaced and luckily my manifold is holding on.
I believe you could have it welded but God knows how long until the problem comes back up.
When is the NCT due? As this would be a fail.
Regarding the welding, I believe it would still have to come out from the car.

At least Honda acknowledged it and covered it.

Ah well I'll know next week in that case as the NCT is then. Car is booked in and all.

Mine has 230k on it. To be honest it has been a lovely car to own and drive. Even at 10 years old people still comment on it that she looks extremely well. I've no problems really in about 2 years of ownership other than a caliper done recently.

A friend has suggested ringing main honda dealers for a quote given that it is such a common problem and one that a warranty did apply to I might not be completely screwed on the price. Worth a try anyway.

You will know if it cracked. The smell in the cabin will be very obvious

Same here other than chain and manifold its been very reliable. Done bearing recently and one sensor last year that's been it. Going well for 10 year old. Try Adams Honda in Portlaoise for quote

Cheers. I'm down south so will ring a few of the main dealers around for a price. Hopefully it doesn't eat into the funds too much but the way the car is running generally I can't see myself parting with it anytime soon so worth the investment me thinks.

Same here. With the chaep tax madness who will want to pay €994 tax. Least we own ours and the reliability makes up for the tax outlay. That's how I see it. Would you fancy the 08+ model when it comes to scrapping or would you fancy something else. Welding may be easiest option even if it only holds for 2 years it will see out life of the car.

Anyone get chains replaced? Mine seem ok but was thinking of doing it as preventative maintenance. Mine is 06 with 280k on it. Still original manifold, clutch, flywheel and turbo. Runs well and no intention of changing it. Reliable out.

Friend of mine had a 2006 civic with a cracked manifold in 2013, irish dealership didn't want to know or care, he went to a honda dealership in the north and they replaced it for free no questions asked.

Is your 06 face-lift model if so I think chain was modified in them. If it's 6 speed its the facelift.

Once this car is run into the ground (however long that takes :pac:) I would fancy that 08 model. It is very stylish and from reading online, honda seemed to have ironed out all their issues with diesel engines by then anyway. The manifold aside I really enjoy this car still after a few years owning it.

How are they going? are the engine mounts the original cause of this?

I would have though welding would be sufficient enough but tbh if you are having to take the engine out to replace (if) then swapping for new manifold would be preferred to insure it doesnt happen again. Perhaps the mounts need replacing too ?

Ya its facelift model. No rattle so presuming they are ok. Serviced on button with good oil is key.

I did last november. Unless its making noises then dont even think about it.
The injectors usually break when they are being removed which is a huge expense. Continue to use the correct oil and service every 5k, should be ok then.

The problem was the original manifold was constructed from two separate pieces welded together and the weld wasn't great quality resulted in the cracking or pin hole leaks. The new type, the one put in by Honda as part if the warranty, was made from a single cast. No welding involved.

5k service... Still doing mine at recommended intervals 12500 m \ 20,000 km. 90℅ motorway. I was going to bring down to 10,000 miles \ 16k next year when I hit the 300,000 mark.
