Both Bulbs Blown

Last night I found both dip beams had stopped working, so a naturally a web search took precedence over actually checking the car.

    I found this: (Thanks, Iori)

    Dip Beam problem...

    Problem solved!!!

I decided to begin in the most obvious place and checked the bulbs – both had blown!!!
Now I could just leave it at that, maybe I should, but I feel that I must share the following thoughts with you.

Both bulbs definitely failed together as it happened this morning before it was fully light, then the bulb failure warning came on in the centre of the dash. I find it quite intriguing as both bulbs are on independent circuits.

As the forum is a large community I'm sure there are many views that could be

    The Statistician.
They would analyse vast amounts of data for hours on end and come up with a figure to denote the likely-hood of both bulbs failing simultaneously, and could provide variables to apply to this figure to take account of such things as direction of travel, speed, altitude, climatic conditions....

    The Auto Electrician
He would persuade us that even though the two bulbs were on seemingly independent circuits the power is derived from the same source therefore the surge that would have occurred when one bulb blew would have taken the second out.

    The Bulb Manufacturer
They would have us believe that the two had failed simultaneously due to their exhaustive R&D and product testing whereby they have come up with a quality product that has no variables, they are built to a standard that will guarantee a long life that can be measured to the millisecond..

    The Spiritualist
Those that are in tune with their inner being and the universe around them would point out that even a common H7 bulbs had feelings and that since both had worked tirelessly in tandem all these years that a bond had grown between them and as one bulb failed the other became so overcome with despair and a feeling of unimaginable solitude that it just gave up.

    Audi
Audi would have us believe that the lighting circuit is designed so as to ensure that if one fails then both should be changed just as you would if you were changing tyres. You should never change one tyre on an axle.

    STOP STOP STOP!!!

All these theories are all very interesting, but I have a simpler and much more logical reason for what really happened.

As it was a Sunday the only place that I could purchase replacement bulbs was at the dreaded Halfords. I have had the car for over two years now and it has become accustomed to my way of thinking, it knows I have an eye for a bargain and has learnt to evaluate the market and ensure that I get value for money, in this instance it had tuned itself to the current Halfords marketing strategy – two bulbs for the price of one!!!! My car knew that if there was a bargain to be had then I would want to make full use of it. It could only imagine how disappointed I would have been to have been given a second bulb free and for that to sit on the shelf in the garage unused for months thereby in effect depriving me of full enjoyment of my bargain.

I think now would be a good time for me to take my tablets.

    Iori
