The tyre is only flat on the bottom, could be worse.

Is the tyre really called "Joyroad"? I guess the side could be made of chocolate.

Yeah tyre can't be plugged or anything. Another needed.

Looks like you're gonna have to get another joyroad for her

Partially on the sidewall, it's gone. By the way, that there is your Sabre-Tooth Tiger tusk. They get everywhere this time of year, when the weather starts to get a little warmer they lie on the road at night soaking up stored heat from the tarmac. Fact.

How in the name of god did she manage to get a puncture like that lol. I'm trying to figure out a scenario that could cause a lump of tree to get stuck in your side wall. She took a short cut through a forest maybe.

    New tyre no doubt.

Fair blustery lately, there's bits of branches all over the place alright.

Would a new tube and a plug in tyre fix the problem ?

Most tyres don't have tubes. A plug in the tyre wall would be very dangerous and liable to burst, no reputable tyre repair place would touch it.

Tube and an enormous plug (oo-err) would be more costly than another joyroad I'd say...

That tyre is scrap, and needs to be replaced.

At the more extreme end of 4x4 off-roading, stab wounds like that (and worse!) can sometimes be stuffed with a load of tubeless tyre repair strings so that it'll hold 4 or 5 psi for long enough to get the vehicle back to somewhere suitable for changing the wheel, but driving such a thing on the road would be lunacy and should never be attempted!

    Most certainly not.

No, as I said it cannot be plugged.
In short - tyre cannot be used at all. When a puncture is on the sidewall like yours the tyre integrity is gone.

I think the integrity of those tyres was gone from the factory. Yet another example why unknown Chinese tyres should not be used.

I don't think the tyre brand would have made that much of a difference.
Speed of impact and a pointed end will pierce anything you put in front of it.

You guys know your tyres . - Would'nt have known it was Chinese , but is was bought in a back-street garage for €25 a while ago .

Are you sure? The quality tyres have several layers on the side including kevlar in some. I doubt the tyre in the picture did.

Goodyear effecient grip have paper side walls. Depends on the tyre. Load rating would probably be the best indicator of a decent sidewall for heavier duty.

Can't figure it out myself. I did get cuts on the sidewalls a couple of times, but it was from potholes. The only thing I can think about is that she went towards some branches/bushes sideways, it can theoretically happen if they are at the side of a bend.

As for the "shortcut through the forest" scenario...if that's the case OP...you might NOT want to know why your daughter was actually driving and...ehrm...parking, in a some woods :)

I know what ye thinking , but it was genuine .- as we drove back over the cars last route , and it was a tree branch outside of a warehouse demolition site .

When the tyre was removed , there was a stick on the inside 3 inches long . - So its definately an unusual one .

Now she bought a new tyre in a local tyre depot , and the guy did tell us it was Chinese , , cost €45 .

Tonight a neighbour has told us that he can't see the E mark on it .

Can tyres be sold without the E mark ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,786 ✭✭✭slimjimmc

It's illegal to sell a tyre without an E or e mark. Check the inner sidewall, it could be there.

Great , if its illegal then I hope the E mark is somewhere on the tyre , if not I will be going after him .

To be more precise it's illegal to buy or fit a tyre for road use without an E mark. It may not be illegal for a person to sell if he actually doesn't fit it. You could still go after him under consumer rights anyways.

    Hi Dave ,
We not talking about the tyre in opening photos .................The tyre that may not have an E mark is the new tyre , that has now replaced the punctured one .

A tyre is one of 4 which are your only contact on the road, spending €45 on one really says what your priorities are on the value of your life.

I strongly agree, after seeing the last picture of the 'new tyre' and as a driver on public roads and as a parent please heed the above from Atlantic Dawn
