Avensis Diesel fuel economy

    Hi
Looking for a bit of advice here regarding average fueleconomy for my car.

I bought a 06 Avensis diesel with 120 K miles just over 6months ago and im finding its not that economical on fuel. It’s a pre-face liftmodel with the 116 Bhp engine, 5 speed gearbox and averaging 43-45 mpg. Therewas a bit of a flat spot on take off when I bought the car and changing thefuel filter which was in bad condition seemed to solve a lot of this issue. Ihave also inspected the EGR valve which seemed clean considering its function.

My previous car was a 1.9 Mitsubishi Carisma with over 200Kon the clock and was returning 50-52 mpg regularly. I haven’t changed mydriving style or my commute to work either.
I know the Avensis is bigger and heavier but I thought it Iwould be getting close to 50 mpg considering it had 100 K less miles than the Carisma.
I would like to know if what I’m experiencing is the normfor this car or is there other things I should be looking ?
    Thanks

Have you used the brimmed method and is yours Mixed Driving?

The figures quoted are using the brimmed method as the trip counter shows the car is doing better than it is. my commute is about 60/40 split of motorway/regional roads.

That's definitely low Shane. I get that out of my petrol car.

You've the tyres pumped up I presume?

Had to get 2 tyres for it recently so yes all thats good. When the fuel filter was changed, i got the oil and air filter changed too and have seen very little improvement.

Are you getting fuel at different garages or at the same place .Maybe get the injectors checked.

Injectors are quite sensitive in these, given the state of the fuel filter, I'd be suspicious.

I generally get my fuel at a jones oil depot close to work and have been for the past few years and never had a problem with fuel filter in the carisma. I do think the fuel filter condition was thanks to the previous owner as i had only put 9k miles on the car when i got it changed. I was afraid someone would suggest the injectors. What is involved in getting the injectors checked?

5 speed... What speed you doing on motorway?

    My 05 -5 speed 2.2 accord at 110km\ph returns 52 mpg. Drive her at 120-130 and 46mpg.

5 speed will rev higher at the speed limits. You can't blast down the motorway and expect 50 mpg plus especially on a 5 speed.

As far as i know injectors are removed and tested for pressure and spray angle.
also jack up each wheel and check the brake calipers are free and working .
I recently got new tyres on my own car and the fuel consumption has got worse.
Must be more drag from new tyres or something.

I had an avensis 1.6 petrol until recently, i used to get that kind of fuel economy from it - so would have expected a bit more from the daysul.

That said, the carisma was doing a great job for you if you were getting those numbers from it

The injectors need to be tested in the car with a cold engine, is the engine noisier when cold?
the injector compensation feedback value needs to be checked, any Toyota main dealer/ authorized repaired will check this for you.

I think you're doing well to be getting those mpg figures. They can drop to the mid 30s in an all town driving situations. I've never heard of injectors giving trouble in them but I've always used diesel from reputable sources.

@trabpc I take your point but as I stated earlier the carisma I had no issues returning 50 mpg driven in a similiar manner and it was 5 speed.
I tried some STP fuel treatment in 2 tanks of fuel and didn't see any improvement, maybe the millers stuff is better.
Is it worth getting the mass air flow meter checked?
Anyone know of someone in Tallaght/Ballymount area that check injectors and rough cost?

I think you maybe unfairly comparing it too much to your Carisma. The Carisma was from a different era, it was a way lighter and smaller car with an old school diesel engine.

I'd agree with you on that. The Corolla would be more comparable to the Carisma than the Avensis.

Ok, fair point lads. Will try to to be less biased if that's the right words to use.

VW Bora 130k 45mpg country driving commute is only 12 miles per day. 55+ motorway driving.

You do under the limit on the motorway or something?

On long motorway journeys 55+mpg no problems. It is a TDI

My 12 reg avensis 2 l diesel will do over 61mpg on longer trips but can drop to 30s in town.

Tis a quare one. For the last couple of months I've been getting a pretty constant reading of 47mpg from the trip com when doing between 60 & 65 on the Motorway. Today, on the exact same road at the exact same speed & resetting a few times just to make sure, I'm returning between 55 & 60!

Its gotta be the weather. Can't be the fuel cos my last fill was at Applegreen :pac:

I don't use the trip computer, but rather the brim to brim method. Best I ever got was 58 mpg trip from Wex to Mayo, it did include a few short trips on that fill.
