Advertised on carzone for €13999. Anyone any experience with these cars or any thoughts on whether the mileage could be genuine?
    Reg is 08D63772
The car comes up as a UK import from 3 months old but no odometer information available online.
The seller says 'some old guy in Howth owned it'
Sounds like a fishy tale to me.
Any advice on how best to proceed/check mileage is genuine would be welcome

    Thanks!

How much mileage are they saying it has?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13 tceol

78026 kms on the clock in the ad but the dealer has a few miles up on it too

Do you have the original UK reg to check?

Have you done an equivalent motorcheck with a UK service using the UK reg?

No, the motorcheck.ie check also checks uk databases.

Was the car on a mainland uk plate or a Northern Irish plate? If on a northern plate make sure it wasn't changed. Unscrupulous types can import to the North from mainland uk, alter mileage, get a ni plate which will record the new mileage as correct on any checks.

If you have any other doubts, bring it to a bmw dealer or an indie with dealer level software. The mileage on modern bmws are hard to change.

    A UK repmobile that's diesel that's done what 12k km a year.
Very few buy a diesel and do that few km a year.
The ecu as far as I know contains the mileage record on these, unless I could get it verified by a bmw dealer I wouldn't touch it

I think if I am to proceed I will want it checked by a BMW dealer. The seller mentioned that the previous owner bought it in Belfast so I am guessing that's a Northern plate.

The car was only in the UK 8 months then registered here. That original plate is Northern Ireland, my concerns on it would be crash damage unrecorded prior to it getting registered here or it having mega mileage put on it down here and then clocked.Without a paper trail of receipts or verifiable records from a dealer here I would take it as having no verifiable mileage.

Good point however it's a six year old diesel ble with feck all Miles on it. There's petrol 7 series going around with more miles on it of the same age

I sold a one owner 08 520d in January with 65000km on it so it is possible.

Many diesel buyers after 2008 had a very different mindset to those of before 2008. Many people bought them doing the same mileage as they would have in their petrol car.

It seems to have a Northern Irish reg but it didnt stay in the North long so the miles could be genuine. A low mileage diesel is rare but they are out there.

    A 2008 525d is a pretty nice repmobile though!

Mileage should be stored on the key fob, odometer and ECU. Difficult enough to have all 3 locations altered. I'd have it verified by a BMW dealer. If it has any BMW dealer service history they should be able see that on their system too.

Thanks for all the input guys, dealer just agreed to a BMW check so I am sorting that out now.
I'll let you all know how it goes.

Looks to be a nice car and good value too, cheap if you compare to the other 6cyl cars for sale. While they're checking the mileage it might pay to get the fault codes checked, I got stung by not doing this when I bought my 530d.

Also I see its a manual, wouldn't be an issue for me as I like manuals but potential future buyers may prefer autos, just a consideration. Although if that car checks out I think its good value.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13 tceol

    OK so I bought it.
I rang BMW and they said they don't do 'pre purchase' checks due to liability if something goes wrong. I asked him if they would just check the mileage but he said it could still check out on their system but be clocked.
He then said he would check their system on the off chance that they had serviced it and it turns out they had. In Feb 2010 at 35K kms and in Jan 13 at 64K kms. he also told me any of the repairs they did on it and it hadnt anything major. It is also due some free mod so I have to pop into them next week. I am thinking of taking out a warranty with them.

Again, hope this is of interest and thanks for your help

Thanks Ferris, hope the 530D didnt turn out TOO bad. As a matter of interest what were the problems with it?

The glow plugs and glow plug controller were faulty and needed replacement. The car drove fine though so there was no indication. Also when I was getting it done I got the crankcase breather done and the intake swirl flaps changed for blanks as these are recommended by specialists. Yours may not have swirl flaps btw, some 525's didn't have them which is handy.

Don't know where you are based but I'd recommend using a bmw specialist to maintain the car, I use one in swords who's good.

Well done on the purchase, they're a great car and we'll wear.

Friend of mine sold a 09 520d m sport with 22k kms on it a while back. If theres a full service history with the car that you can check up on then you shouldn't need to worry too much

Would an oil change once in almost 3 years be a concern? I know km wise it was probably at recommended interval.

I haven't seen the full service history yet but those dates were just when the car was in Frank Keanes. I am presuming there were other garages involved but I will know more today. Picking her up at 3!

Thanks Ferris. I will be doing my research on what needs doing especially with low mileage diesels as they can have a different set of problems than high mileage cars. I will probably go to the main dealer for the first few years, maybe even get a warranty on it depending on price

I wouldn't be concerned with that. I have done 24k miles on my car in the last 6 years and only changed the oil 3 times, more because of the time rather than mileage.

I would generally change the oil every 10k miles I don't go by the oil change indication on the idrive.

For peace of mind and to get the best out of her, get the EGR cleaned to begin with. If it's possible to get the EGR blanked without too much hassle then do that as well.

If there are swirl flaps and can be blanked, then do that.
Ensure full service is done and the car is breathing properly (new air filter, clean egr, new fuel filter etc).

    Then get it terracleaned.

If you have a few hundred bob to spare, get her remapped.

After that, book a night with the missus at the G Hotel in Galway, get on the motorway and enjoy the grin on your face in the rear view mirror.

... All things going well, then hopefully the grin on your face will be even bigger on the return journey.

    Enjoy.

    Hello,

I have an 08 since new and have only done 75kms so it could be genuine!! Get it checked though hpi etc
I can't justify the diesel with my mileage but love the car she gets a long run once a month
To keep the Dpf in check!!
    Best of luck

Best of luck with the new addition.

One thing to check with low mileage on the age is rubbers perishing and tyres cracking.

Bought an 05 diesel golf 18 months ago with 64k km on the clock and fsh and all good bar the perished wishbone bushing and one wheel bearing needing doing. Also needed 5 new tyres as the old ones had plenty of life but we're cracking due to age.

Have a 07 525D which only had 120k km on it when I bought it in 2014.
Be sure to find out when the last dpf regen as you could have problems further on down the line..I had a faulty egr sensor on mine and it needed a software update then after that to regen properly.
Fantastic car though...I've mine one up for sale as a new baby forced me to get a santa fe and even though the Santa Fe is great for 2 babies and buggies and all that crap it's not even close to the 525D for sheer driving ability and enjoyment.
I hate the thoughts of selling it but its a 07 so tax is 1494 which I could justify but the jeep is also 950 so no point in having to pay both =.
