has anything you've said on boards, Facebook and other sites ever had real world consequences for you, in the negative form? have you ever been 'caught out' saying something online that is far from how you ideally like to present yourself, like in a professional environment?

surely employers should omit social media profiles when considering candidate suitability, its about what they bring to the job and not outside of it. but then again keeping reputation in mind, could a quick social media profile check be a good character reference in itself?

Doesn't matter a sh*t what you do. They'll end up finding some dumb schmuck on Facebook with the same name as you and think that's you.

Some lad accused me of hacking his bebo account one day, but I didn't. He wasn't best pleased. So I hacked it then after, sure he never saw that one coming. Don't do social media anymore now, off the grid, not wasting time advertising how good my life is to others. Havn't seen yer man in years either

Yes, I got in a lot of trouble for something on Bebo (ha!) when I was a teenager. Luckily I was young and it wasn't really an important job, but I learned my lesson. Now I am quite cautious when posting things on social media.

I also can't believe some of the stuff that some people put on their social media profiles, especially when many people have their boss as a Facebook friend.

Ah lads, come on. You can't talk about mod actions on thread. It's in the charter.

Cards will be started to be handed out.

Prison is basically where people who are site banned can appeal to the admins. Gordon is the number one ranking in League of Bastards.

    And I'm serious: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/banlist.php

I've had a few close encounters alright, nothing I didn't get over though, it happens alright, but with me what you see is pretty much what you get. I'm the same online as I am offline :)

Nope and simply because it is not linked to my real life.

Ah but it's not really me saying it you see. It's my boards character that's saying it, he takes on a different personality to the actual meat popsicle tapping the actual keyboard at this very present minute in very time. He was originally intended to be a short-lived troll but somehow managed to survive into this 3rd year on the site due to some miracle. Someone in the heavens must be looking out for him

Well there was that time I left my LinkedIn profile untended and a work colleague added masturbation as a skill. He and a few others then endorsed that skill on their LinkedIn so it turned up on all shared mutual feeds.

Works been hard to find since

Nope and simply because it is not linked to my real life.

That's the best way to go about social media. I just have my basic info, nothing about where I work, study or live etc. Most peoples minds have been warped by it though, its seems they live life to impress others, we all know them.

I can see the pros and cons of it, but if im honest I preferred life when people took social media a little less serious than it is today or better yet when it never existed.

My friends knew the password to my old Bebo account and would send messages to a girl saying that I loved her.She would never speak to me again.

I was applying for top firms and one of them followed me on twitter. The next day I got a rejection email from said firm. I checked my twitter and the last tweet I retweeted was:

"Listen, I think what the chairman is saying makes sense."

"But are we gonna take political advice from a guy who's half chair, half man?"

Needless to say I then changed my twitter name so I couldn't be found.

Yes, once. Then I learnt not to put controversial stuff up :D. It's difficult because my generation have really grown up with it and I think an awful lot of people are completely oblivious to its downsides, whereas I think older people are naturally more reserved and wary about social media (quite right too).

It seems unethical but seeing as the information is at their fingertips and they can't be spotted stalking a person's Facebook/Twitter (actually LinkedIn does tell you who viewed your profile unless they hide who they are, but that's fair enough - one of LinkedIn's functions is recruitment) nothing can stop them, so it's wise for people to lock down their profiles as much as possible to non friends/followers.
I can't be searched for on Facebook by those I'm not friends with, and my name is unusual.
My tweets can't be seen by non followers. I don't tweet much but have possibly retweeted stuff that might be frowned upon (by someone very uptight).
