Can priests marry?

It is actually illegal for Priests to marry or just a restriction within the Catholic religion?

I mean could a priest have a civil marriage and then wait for the church backlash?

What if all the priests decided to get married - surely the lack of priests may force the church's hand - they couldn't get rid of them all?

Not saying that all priests want to marry but if they did ....?

I'd imagine a civil marriage would be legal but he'd be removed from his duties.

Plenty of them married with kids before they get ordained, then they must take the vow of celibacy though so no more sweet sweet lovin' for the missus, as long as god's not watching anyway.

    Firstly:
Same sex marriage is not yet legislated properly for
    Secondly:
Marrying someone under the age of 16 is illegal

So Priests are $hit out of luck

Depends on your definition of priest.

Biblically, all believers are priests, and there is no restriction of marriage.

Catholic priests not being allowed to marry is purely something they have instituted. There is no biblical basis for it.

Aside from some sort of elaborate troll

If you want to marry so much don't become a priest.
If you're already a priest, then leave

It's being considered recently alright -

I personally think it would be a good thing for the Church to allow priests to marry.

Anglican priests who convert to R Catholicism can stay married, and work as R Catholic priests.

Doesn't really answer your question, but quite an unusual fact.

Celibacy is not marrying, chastity is no more sweet loving. RCC priests take a vow of celibacy not chastity. I think nuns take a vow of celibacy, thats why ther are called nuns.

There was an interesting debate on Newstalk this morning and it was brought up in broad terms. The Catholic church is facing a bit of a resource crisis in Ireland, apparently there are only 2 ordained priests under the age of 40 at the moment in Ireland. They were saying if its ever going to change Francis is the best hope as he sems to be the most radical to date. They also put the reasons for this down largely to the whole Celebecy thing.

So Anglican Priests can boink the missus?

Yea, it's one of those technicalities - god does be really pissed about it, but he knows a smiting would never stand up in court so he has to just grin and bare it. Funny how shít works out sometimes innit:D

    I would think so.

Eastern Orthodox priests have to marry. The idea being that it would be madness to have someone with absolutely no experience of marriage advising people on marriage. Also it sets a good familial example

Why do so many people think the rules of the Catholic Boys Club are actual laws of the land?

I suggest either the Christianity forum, wot know about priests, or the Legal Discussion forum, wot know about laws.

I do not suggest After Hours, wot only know how to take the piss out of priests.

Please read whoevers charter you're deciding to be using.

Bless you all. Have a wonderful day.
