Information Technology and Skills Course

I have a flatmate who is signing on at the moment he is in his second week of a 30 week course called Information Technology and Skills. He just received a letter in the post while he was signing on that he had to attend this course, it starts from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm and its Monday to Friday. I've never heard of this before, is anyone else doing this? I'm on a CE scheme myself but I'm just curious as to what this is about, would anyone from the DSP have any info about what this is about. The way my flatmate thinks about it, it comes across as a sort of punishment for folk who haven't taken up a CE scheme or a JobBridge as yet. He is 53 so he is not part of the course for Under 25's which looks similar and he has only being five months unemployed so not a serious case of long term unemployed. I'm actually surprised I haven't seen a thread about this yet.

I realise now after talking to a colleague at work who works in SWA that this is actually part of the TUS Scheme although apparently my house mate doesn't get the twenty euro extra, so i told him to check that out with the people who are running his course.

Tus is not a course but is a community work placement scheme with the following eligibility criteria

To be eligible to participate in the Tús scheme you must:

Have been continuously unemployed for at least 12 months and "signing on" on a full-time basis; and
Have been receiving a jobseeker's payment (Jobseeker's Benefit or Jobseeker's Allowance) from the Department of Social Protection for at least 12 months; and
    Be currently receiving Jobseeker's Allowance.

Thanks for the reply Balagan, what is the thing my flatmate is on then? Also another detail I missed is that he attends full time 8.30 am to 4.30 pm Monday to Friday so it definitely isn't the 19.5 hours that CE or TUS typically is and he doesn't get the twenty euro top up, he has to get two buses each way so that swallows up his money too. He has to go out to this place in Mervue, Galway city.

He's on a full time fas course.

If he's getting two buses, there must be some travel allowance, so its some top up.

Also, if he lives in town and getting two city buses. How much does that cost on buses. €4 to get there and €4 back home again. That's just for one day.

You should check out the leap card. Its €5 for the card itself. Credit can be put on the card, somehow. And for approximately €20 a week, he can get anywhere around Galway City. Not sure if that helps.

You can top up a leap card at any centra / spar / londis whatever cornershop that sells them. Just like buying credit for a pay as you go mobile. Check Commuting & Transport for more along those lines
