Is it when the engineering works are on (most Saturdays and over Easter)?

    There are bus transfers Heuston-Athy.

The journey is Athlone-Kildare, Kildare to Kilkenny

I know that - but there may be issues with that trip if it is on a date when the engineering works are on.

What date are you trying to book on?

Athlone to Kilkenny is a cross route journey and is not currently bookable, i.e. a combination of Dublin - Galway and Dublin Waterford trains. You can however book each of the components of the journey on its own i.e. Athlone to Kildare and Kildare to Kilkenny as separate tickets but this may end up costing more than a ticket on the day.
