I've a 141 1.6TDCI 115bhp Focus. I'm not sure how accurate the computer is but it indicates 57.2mpg average from new, and covering 16000 miles.

Honest John is usually good on real world mpg for various car types. It's a UK site but should be relevent, right?

Thanks for your reply. I've read honest John real mpg and it seems that lots of people have problems with fuel economy. 57mpg is very good to be fair. I'm looking at the 95bhp car 151. Wonder would it make any difference.

Have you any other problems with the focus or opinions on it.

What kind of warranty did you get with the car did the warranty cost extra.

Given Henry's very good return, maybe you'd be better off getting the 115 cos you'd have an extra bit of poke too?

I'll be buying a demo or hire car from a dealer so 95 bhp is my only option. Thought that the ford was slow enough to accelerate particularly in first and second gear

There'd be an appreciable performance difference for sure.

I had a 95bhp version for a while in 2012, and it was adequate. The 115bhp is way quicker, which makes overtaking much easier, and probably means it get an easier life in everyday driving. How exactly that equates to mpg I'm not sure about. I doubt there's much in it.

Other than that I know I'm biased but the Focus is an excellent car.

I'll miss my current one. It'll be gone shortly.

None of these cars are going to be pigs on fuel. They all pretty much have similar mass and power so I don't think there would be much between them in everyday fuel usage.

the focus isnt getting great figures on honest john and from reading around on the internet is only getting 45mph in some cases

Even the 95bhp version will go quicker than that.

I have a 141 Focus & love it. It is the estate version so great for bringing buggies, dogs etc out for the day. It is my 3rd Focus & my next car will be another Focus.

What's your fuel economy like. Is it a diesel

What is the trade in value like on the focus

It is diesel. Sorry I don't take much notice of mpg but do drive all over the country & seems very economical. I trade it in every 2 years as I have a primary medical cert. Often a buyer is waiting.

You seem to change your cars a good bit Henry. Did you ever get a chance to take a drive in a 2.0 163bhp focus? It's a contender for my next car.

Nope. I don't believe they were imported here officially, at least not until very recently.

I also suspect a 2.0 TDCI Focus might not be too easy to move on. Nothing to do with the car just the motoring publics perception about "big engines".

I have a 1.6 95Hp Focus diesel (new model) with a 12 reg and has 89,000Km on it. I don't rip the arse out of it and do a combination of town and open road driving and it's averaging 47/48mpg. That has been consistent since I bought it last summer. A very comfortable car on a long journey and I would certainly buy another one, though I would get the 115hp next time.

I thought that I should be getting better fuel economy and that it should be up over 50 mpg at least. A friend is driving a fluence and they are getting 53mpg.

Do you find the focus sluggish when starting off in first and second gear?

Would the 115bhp give a better fuel economy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,288 ✭✭✭black & white

I don't find the Focus sluggish at all and my most recent cars before the Focus were 2010 Diesel Golf 1.6 (105hp) and before that a 2006 Diesel Megane 1.5 (106hp). Both would have had slightly better mpg than the Focus, low 50's. I'm not sure about the 115 giving better mpg although I would suspect so. The Focus feels heavier than both the Megane and Golf so maybe that's why it's mpg is slightly worse.
