In the US and Canada drive in oil changes are big business, you basically drive in and they change the oil in the car while you remain in your car, all done fast with no appointment needed. Would such a business work over here? I spotted it on Undercover Boss Canada...

Not until Not Changing Oil On-Time becomes an NCT failure. :pac:

when I last had my car serviced, I asked them if they could do it while I waited, I went for a tea in a local cafe and they had it done in under an hour, the messing around involved if the place isnt local, for an oil change is ridiculous. If anywhere actively offered this, I would use them...

Depends on the car, some cars you can't even change from the Sump.

Also what grade of oil would they use and what if they make a mess of your sump plug putting it back on.

Never mind that some cars need disconnection of the Fuel Pump to get at the oil filter and a special vacuum tool is necessary to bleed the fuel line.

In principle, it is a fine idea. In practice, I fear hordes of relatively unskilled minimum-wage types who know naught of crush-washers, oil-grades, sulphated ash, and so on and so forth. In my experience those who would do everything end up doing nothing.

I've read about these types of garages on American forums.... and these are exactly the complaints people have.

It's a great idea, but most Irish people don't do oil changes, so you could be pretty confident that it wouldn't be a success unless the person looking to start the venture went about trying to chain the nations mindset on car maintenance, but that is no small task.

take my aunt, perfectly intelligent, well educated person, steady job, married with kids etc. buys herself a new-ish punto the other year, a fairly average car, say €5k i think it cost.

rings me the other week to say there is a light on her dashboard and she needs help. got there and it's the oil light. dipped the engine, dipstick is bone dry. now she's had this car 2-3 years. i topped it up and asked her is she due a service... "a service, why would i need one of those, would they top up the oil?". Ireland must be one of very few countries where people will not spend €2-300 a year on basic maintenance to protect an investment that cost them tens of thousands. that car went 3 years and countless miles on the same oil and filter and would have went for 3 years more on it had it not have ran dry.

Would be great, I'd use it.
There's a place in Charlestown Shopping Centre car park in Finglas offering a service while you shop.
If they used an oil extractor that would cut out some of the risk of damage. Having the right grade oil in stock would be a problem for these places and the customer I'd say.

If its just an oil change, would you not be better off investing in one of these

    www.micksgarage.com/proddetails.aspx?pid=4943361

and then for every second service where the oil filter and other stuff needs to be replaced, just book a car in as normal ?

(and buy your oil when halfords have their special offer on)

They certainly have their uses, but I couldn't see Toyotafanboi's aunt going for it. :pac:
