Community Welfare office closed, who do I speak to?

I was evicted from my home in January and was very lucky to find a new place in the same area that accepted rent allowance and was within the limits, I had to re-apply to receive my rent allowance for my new address.

I moved into the new house with 2 friends and we split the rent three ways, when the form was filled in the landlord filled in her section and put the total rent of the property that the three of us pay, after 4 weeks I was contacted by the Department of Social Protection to inform me that this was incorrect and that only my rent should be filled out in this section, I had filled in on the form elsewhere how much the individual rent was, but that wasn't relevant.

I had to fill the complete form in again, I asked could I just fill in the incorrectly completed part (e.g. the landlord part) as the rest of the information was correct, I was told I could not and I would need to complete the form again.

I completed the form again and sent it in and haven't been able to get in touch with anyone regarding the status of my claim, they wont reply to my emails and they don't answer the phone number provided on the website.

I was in a situation like this before 7 years ago when I first moved out of my family home, back then I was able to go to my local Health Center and talk to my Community Welfare officer, she was able to give me emergency money till it was sorted out, my health office was closed down during the recession and I'm not sure who I should go and talk to now.

I'm a third year student and on the back to education scheme, I have 1 year left and I'll be out of the system for good, I'm under a lot of pressure with exams and suffer from anxiety along withe other issues, this is all starting to affect my college work, I'm not sleeping at night and I'm slowly going into debt.

    What can I do?

Where are you? List of SWA offices administering RA is here..

If your area is covered by a Central Rents Unit, the list is here.

  • I'm in Dublin 16, I had been in contact with the Central Rent Unit for my area and they where initially helpful, I was corresponding with them view email, but they have since stopped replying to me.

I really don't know what to do. when they closed down the local community officer centers what replaced them? The people in the central rent unit are clinical about the way they deal with people.

Why were you evicted?Maybe this isn't helping

  • The old landlord wanted to renovating the property, it was a run down house, but in a good area and he knew he could get a lot more than we were paying.

He asked us about upping the rents and we asked him to fix stuff around the house first, eviction notices were served a week later.

I had been there for over six years

It's 112 days notice for you to leave. Did you know that? And was that the notice you were given??

If not - I'd be taking a case to the PRTB for wrongful eviction.
