What do ye think, ladies who colour...

I've plenty of grey (I think: haven't seen it in a while, of course, ha ha)

and I try all the home dyeing brands.

What does anyone else think is the most lasting of the supermarket brands?
Nutrisse, Excellence, Casting etc etc ?? Anyone got opinions?

The last kind I tried was €1.99 from Dealz: the liquids were a little stiff and hard to mix together and it didn't last very well - grey showed through quite soon. But on the other hand it was cheap (!!) and the shade was a perfect match for my natural colour. (dark brown)

Not doing Dealz again this time but, what brand should I choose for best permanence?

PS Grey roots showing along parting and hairline: urgent!!

Well it depends on whether or not you use permanent or semi permanent and how fast our hair growth is. Also how much coverage you require.

Ive the odd grey hair, nothing stand out, and my natural colour is auburny brown so I home dye with semi permament red (usually use Schwarzkopf Country Colours - not available in Ireland, I get it on Amazon - very cheap to bulk buy) every 3 weeks. My own shade is close enough to the red I use that if I delay dying its not really noticable, and my grey is so minor it doesnt really matter either. Ive gone 6 weeks between dyes.

I never use permanent anymore after more or less destroying my hair in my youth with permanent hair dye and taking years to grow out the damaged hair. I also dont go too many shades away from my natural anymore, I went black for a couple of years and the regrowth was just too noticeable. I never go to the hairdressers except for a trim now and then - too expensive to dye in the hairdressers and red doesnt hold well either so prefer semi permanent that I can top up frequently.

I have brown hair and a few scattered greys. Used loreal preference mousse absolute a few times and loved it (found it hard to come by in a few boots). The colour was rich and so easy to apply. Covered greys well too. Only downfall was the strong smell and the fact that at €16 it is fairly expensive.

Olia is a great colour but leaves my hair feeling really greasy for a good few washes after.

Used to love casting but now I don't have anyone helping me with the hair colour, I find the mouses a little easier to manage.

The john Frieda precision foam was my last one. Again loved the mouse, enough to cover my very long very thick hair in one packet but not very impressed with the grey coverage. Still a few shining on through.

I have mid to dark brown hair with a few greys in between. I only use permanent dye, my hair is quite thick and long so I can only handle doing the roots and wouldn't want to dye everything. My favourite dye is Perfect 10, but I often get other ones too. The only ones I really didn't like were Nutrisse (colour didn't last) and Olia (too greasy). I like the foam ones too, although I don't think they last as long and they seem to be kind of hard to get these days. I often get Clairol Root Touch Up as well, it's really handy for in between.

I've naturally very dark brown hair & have a fair bit of grey hair, I've tried several colours, and this is my favourite:
    http://www.colormask.co.uk/colormask/uk/en/home.html
I find it the easiest to apply out of any that I've tried, in between I've also used that root cover up dye (can't remember the name of it sorry - it's in all the chemists/boots/superdrug though and it does for a good job, specially for when you don't have a huge amount of time to spare cause it only has to be on your hair a few mins

@Tabitharose - I think that is the only one I've never tried! Thank you - it looks well worth the trial - I will do that next.

For Easter I went with my old pal Nutrisse, good enough results as usual but it leaves the hair a little bit limp.

Loreal is always a good brand and not too expensive

Tried the Colormask and didn't like it: harsh colour and wore off.

Have since tired Dealz again and still find a good texture and colour, but wears away very quickly and very hard to mix.

Recent best-of award definitely going to Vidal Sassoon: tried for first time this summer, and I rate it excellent. :-)

Yes a little dearer, but you do get what you pay for in this world - mostly.
