Having purchased a second hand refurbished computer from a online supplier, and paid by visa card using verified by visa procedure,i got a sales order confirmation via email.
The next day the supplier sent email requiring a copy of my passport or tv licence,to be sent to 2 different email addresses in order to confirm my identity. What is the point of the verified by visa procedure.Anyone else had a similar request.

Does it state anywhere on their site that they may require ID for purchasing the computer? It's possibly a measure to cover themselves if the card is stolen, but as you said, what's the point of using the verified by visa or 3D secure features that most cc companies offer if they're still going to ask you for a copy of ID.

Check their T&C's of ordering, and get back onto them. Tell them you are not happy providing them with ID details of any sort. Worst case, you request your transaction cancelled and get it elsewhere.

I don't see anything wrong with giving them a copy of your TV licence (blanking out the number) as they have your address and let's face it apart from the address info nothing else is really private. I would never send a copy of my passport ever.

If in doubt ring them and speak to them, try to verify it ovethe phone. And never send a copy of your passport.

Put a watermark of the company name in the bottom of the passport and send it that way. That way it cannot be used for anything other than confirming your identity.

the tv licence is not in my name.the company in question will not accept it.that leaves just the passport.

    Or taking your business elsewhere.

Surely another utility bill besides a TV licence would suffice.

Would never send copy of passport. If entertaining them I'd say something along the lines of it not being my property and wont be handing it over.

I see no reason why they are asking this, they already have your money.

I'd get back to them and say 'no hard feelings I'll just cancel my transaction' I suspect they'll change their tune. Worse case scenario you get your money back In a couple of weeks and the company will get charged a charge back fee.
