Hi i am just wondering how the people with ocd on here cope with the illness because i know its not curible but i want to find out the best ways to reduce it.My brother has it bad and it only gets worse when he drinks. He doesnt really tell people about it but i started noticing little things but mostly when he drinks.Every time he drinks he gets to the stage where he cant control himself and am thinking is that because of the ocd and that the drinking helps him to forget his habits? he tells me he feels guilty all the time and keeps getting thoughts of somthing bad happening to a family member if he doesnt do somthing

If he has it bad then he should probably be going to see a professional to try help if he isn't already. It would be something I have very mildly I have to do things in even numbers even small things like if my hand tips off the frame of the door I have to do it again or if I scratch my eyebrow or something I have to do it an even number of times. I like things in parallel lines etc too but I think that is the case with most people. It used to be more of a problem what helped for me was for the rational part of my brain to overrule what I was wanting to do I would get that same feeling about what would happen if I didn't but I had to tell myself that it was just in my head and had no actual bearing on the future.

OCD Ireland has a website and they run a group for families who have member with OCD as well as groups for the sufferers themselves. Lots of info on their website anyway.
