Number of issues, wheel hub related.

    Hi folks,

I have a 2001 TDi A4 with 210,000 miles on it. Getting to an age now where things are starting to wear out on it.

Long story short I am having a number of issues with it lately and I think they may be all related.

The car, in my opinion needs new disks up front even though the wear indication light hasn't come on, there's a fairly decent lip on them and I like to try keep on top of things.

Also this week I have had the ABS and ESP lights staying on constantly when driving. Fluids are fine and the brakes are working, the car has just decided to turn the ABS off for whatever reason.

To top this off I have a very low rumble coming from the front, usually when decelerating at around 40kmh. I have had the wheels balanced recently and there is no vibration while driving on motorways. This is just a low dull steady beat rumble that is felt at low speed and it is in time with the wheels turning.

If I was to self diagnose from a bit of reading online, the rumble could possibly be a wheel bearing, would this explain the ABS and ESP lights however?

FWIW, I stupidly bumped a kerb a couple of weeks back (front left wheel hit it face first as I was doing a hasty u-turn) and I remember thinking that it probably didn't do the car any favors. Now that the above has cropped up I think it's related. I have had the car up on axle stands and rocked the wheel at 12/6 and couldn't feel any real play, maybe a tiny tiny bit but the car recently passed it's NCT (although I hit the kerb a few days later)

I may just leave the car to my mechanic, I usually try to tackle jobs myself but the front bearings on these look like a pain in the arse and I dont have the time.

Anybody care to shed some light and reassure that I'm somewhat in the right direction with my thought?

    Cheers!

There's definitely a wheel bearing on the way out. As far as I remember the abs sensor isnt a part of the bearing itself, but seperate. A diagnosis should point you in the right direction there, could be anything from the sensor, to a twig snapping a wire or brake metal sticking to the magnetic sensor, throwing it off.

As for the bearing, there a pure pain. The bearing will need heavy pressing / hub tools but only after the nightmare of detaching the upper control arms from the hub unit. They are usually corroded into place and the bolt holding them snaps inside the hub requiring drilling (Passats too..) An extremely patient Mechanic might get lucky if they take their time dislodging the bolt, (wd 40, careful heating and time) or it might have been done more recently in other work, but if it hasn't, expect the worst.
