Setting up your own internship?

Does anyone have any experience approaching a company and setting up an internship (non-Jobbridge) with them? For example, if you wished to switch from your current industry but had no experience in your desired industry, are companies receptive to this? What is the best way to go about this? And what things should you avoid when doing this?

    Any input appreciated.

I've tried doing that way if they were offering a jobbridge and I just offered my services doesn't always work that way its either a jobbridge or not at all when I was looking for a work-placement for college last year. Ended up in the volunteering sector.

I'd write a letter maybe to local businesses and companies and ask if you could do a week to three months work voluntarily for a few weeks? Some offices are great to do it but some aren't depends what industry are you hoping to switch to? Other possibility is to ask a company to support you for a jobbridge. The solas/fas website be good for CE schemes if applicable to you?

Thanks for the reply doovdela. What kind of responses did you get when you tried to set it up? What were their reasons for not going in for it? I guess they won't make any money from having you - isn't there some allowance they get from doing Jobbridge? Also, Jobbridge/solas/CE are not applicable to me.

I'd also be interested to hear any responses to this. Just wondering how open companies are to taking on people?

I'd ideally be looking to complete a 2-3 month internship this Summer.

Bascially they weren't willing to take me on for free with me volunteering to offer my services for free. They wouldn't take me on unless it was a jobbridge! Other places well my classmates got there before me. Other places didn't reply to me!

Wow. It's a sad state of affairs when we can't give our time away for free! :( It doesn't exactly inspire confidence! :pac:
