Need to get a bigger car cos my family getting bigger! Getting a good deal on a 09 astra estate diesel ecoflex(dealer looking for just under €6k which seems good to me). I know it's a boring, unattractive car but that doesnt bother me,just looking for a reliable, comfortable, economical car with a bit of space. Anything I should watch out for? There's 65000 miles on the clock, should the timing belt be done at this stage?

If that's miles and not 65k km then yes imo it's overdue a belt change. For me 60k be max mileage and tend to change between 40-50k.

Might be worth a try to see if they will change it before you buy or do a deal to change it at cost before you collect car.

What engine is in car do you know?

Just I think the 1.9 come with a m32 gearbox which give problems during to lack of decent oil in box. Especially if it's been under heavy loads towing.

    .

    It's 1.7 cdti. And it's 65k miles on clock so it's overdue a change.
Is changing the timing belt a big job? How much could I hope to knock off the price if they won't change it...€500?

Dealer prices I'd say 550-650, price for kit with waterpump on my opc was about 400 alone from memory.

Job wise depends on experience say couple hours with double checking everything as you go.

Ok thanks. I'll ring the dealer later and see what he says.

No worries, good luck with the car if you buy it.

Maybe a good idea for gearbox oil to be changed as part of a big service still, dealer garage will say its non service item but better imo to still change it, maybe every 3-4 years using good oil.

Just talked to him, he said there's no belt in it, it's a timing chain. I asked about water pump, he says it's fine. It's an import from Belfast, he's gonna put 2 new front tyres, do full service, pay vrt and put it through nct. Warranty is €250 extra. Might take a look at it next week.

That's very low mileage for a 6 year old diesel especially a UK imported Vauxhall Astra estate. Is there a service history that is verifiable? Have you done a history report on the car?

The 1.7cdti has a timing belt.
    The 1.3cdti is chain driven.

So if this car is a 1.7cdti then the dealer is incorrect. The timing belt is not due to be changed until 100k miles on this model though.

The 1.7cdti has a timing belt.
He defo said its a timing chain. I checked out 2 exact same 1.7 cdti astra estates today in Dublin, one of the dealers did say that some had belts and some had chains....dunno who's telling the truth?!!
Is 65k miles not about average for a 6 year old car? Just over 10k miles per year? I tend to do about 10 to 14k miles per year, but I commute about 50 miles per day.
Anyway I'll check the reg and get full service history of the one I'm interested in.

    Is it a Astra J?? being 09 I presumed it be a Astra H and J came in 2010.

11-12k a year is nice and low. 20k used to be regarded as average.

1.7cdti 100% has a timing belt. Don't take my word for it if you don't want. Ring an Opel dealer.

Lads, I got the reg of that car. What's the best site to check it out on? Is cartell.ie good? Or is there a UK equivalent?

For a UK import www.hpicheck.com is best I reckon.
