    Hi all,
My car is fire damaged. The damage is contained to under the bonnet and parked up in a car park now. I need some help on what to do next. Do i call breakdown and have it towed to my house?
Is it worth calling insurance or do i just call a scrappy?

Car is 02 primera 98k miles.

Either way i need to move it as the car park is monitored by cowboys clampers.

Ah yeah scrap it is. However is it worth calling in a claim for such an old car? Have tpft

I wouldn't claim. Factor in 250 quid excess and it makes even less sense.

I personaly wouldn't bother, buy yourself another older car with an NCT if that's what your gonna replace it with anyways.

I'd inform your insurance company anyway, you may get an unexpected bill from fire brigade or for damage to car park etc.

Spoke with insurance co. They're saying I'd have to pay 300 excess and lose all my no claims. Called few scrapyards. Prices seem to vary. Anyone know a good scrappy wanting to collect and give me a few bob? Car isnt too damaged. Firebrigade managed to drive the car off the road and into the carpark.
    Could be worth someone fixing

I mean I don't know what's wrong with it, but for a car that was probably only worth 800 working, I can't imagine anyone wanting to fix it up. Fire damage could have done all sorts of madness to it. And not to mention getting rid of the burning smell would be an big task in itself.

Be prepared for Fire Brigade charges as well in a few weeks time.

Car got stolen in January and burnt out. Claimed on Insurance as it was worth enough to claim, luckily they also covered the €500 fire brigade charges too, but the first person in the insurance company I spoke to tried to get out of it.

    Does it actually still drive?

    How big a fire?

Sell the car off for scrap.

You could consider if parts on it are good such as gearbox, wheels tyres as these are needed all the time.

I have a 2002 primera and gearbox went had to get second hand one. They are rubbish and really wouldn't be worth fixing.

Car drives but I wouldn't be recommending it. It appears the clutch gave up, slipped and overheated. Been quoted few prices. Thanks for replies. Due to scrap next week. Ill pay the firebrigade myself as 500 for a claim isnt worth it

So drivers with slipping clutches are at risk of fires breaking out

    Never thought that could happen

Stick it on adverts and donedeal, see if someone is willing to give anything for it at all.

I'd switch insurance companies to, Aviva and Axa Fire claims don't appear to affect NCB ( very quick read through policy documents and faq's, if inaccurate usual disclaimers applied :) )

    Axa http://www.axa.ie/faq/car-insurance-faq/ q11
    Aviva http://www.aviva.ie/online/claims/motorclaims/noclaimsdiscount/

As mentioned before, I'd also recommend advertising it on Adverts.ie or Donedeal.ie
Scrap could give you €100, but someone there could offer you €200

Any cars I ever had that I was planning on sending to scrap, I never actually had to! I put them up on donedeal, stating what has happened the car and the price that the scrap yard has offered. I always got more from someone than what the scrap yard had offered :)

Note: This may not work with all cars, but since this is a Nissan then there is a strong chance that someone would want it (most of what I sold were Nissans and Toyotas)

Don't inform the insurance company. They will use it to increase your premium next year or use it to dispute any future claims you may have. Your not claiming donuts no business of theirs.

Depending on the damage, you might get away with just a new clutch....

Might be perfectly serviceable? What's the actual damage?

Are you sure your mechanic didn't leave the fuel filter banjo nut loose, letting fuel run down onto the clutch bellhousing, or something like that?

Sounds like your being misled to me.

The mosses was the driver. Definitely clutch was slipping. Was it the eventual cause of killing the car I'm not sure. Got frustrated waiting on a tow so towed it myself today with tow rope to the inlaws arouns 2km away. Had to reverse car and it did just that. There is still a burnt car smell from the . bonnet but no major damage i can see. I'm no expert though.

Gear boxes for primeras of that vintage are always in high demand. If you have the space to store it for breaking you could make a few quid off it.
That's if it's not repairable of course.

Bring it to a mechanic and get it checked out.

My mother was driving her car in town yesterday and the clutch jammed (stayed pushed down, wouldnt come back up). She was able to pull the clutch back up with her hand but the smell of burning clutch was cruel in the car. It happened at 4pm yesterday and the smell was still there at 11pm last night, even after I drove approx 100km in the car.

Brought it to the mechanic today and he found nothing wrong with it, only that she burned the sh*t out of the clutch. He said the smell would lingre for a while but he was able to put some fluid in the air-vents to get rid of the smell.

    Cost us €0.
