Solicitors out of work

Just wondering if there are any other solicitors out there feeling hopeless that they will never get back into practice? I have been out of work for 2 years, I have done courses to keep me updated but I feel like I am completely out of the loop and worried I won't be employable again. Anyone else feeling like this or have any suggestions what I can do? I'm currently working in an admin job as we need the money so working for free is not an option, the place I was made redundant from actually had a guy come in after me and work for free.

Whereabouts are you located? Several people have told me recently that the market in Dublin is much improved and a lot of my friends have moved jobs in capital the last 6 months.

I get the feeling that most of these jobs went unadvertised and were found either by cold calling or word of mouth. Don't give up and keep on looking. Best of Luck!

Thanks Uno, unfortunately I'm in the west and things are extremely slow here, I'm the only solicitor in my family so I don't have many contacts to try and get back into work.

I think that's sickening how an employer can let you go and get a solicitor in on that jobs bridge scam..

I have heard that things in the West and the South are still very bad for solicitors. If you aren't able to move to where the work is it could be a while before you find anything.

If I were in your shoes I would start by ringing the partners in every firm within a certain radius of where you are. Just explain your situation, ask them if they are planing on recruiting and to start networking that way. You might be surprised by how happy many of them will be to try and help you out somehow.

Yeah it's such a joke the job bridge only suits employers and exploits employees. It's so frustrating and worse because there's nothing we can do, I can't move to Dublin due to family circumstances and years of study is going down the drain, I'm fearful, for good.

It is demoralising but keep the chin up and keep plugging away at applying for positions..maybe spam practices email inbox's with your CV! Persevere!

Would the possiblity of being an in-house consoul, training in HR, or project management be an option? From my experience in the IT industry, the legal complexities are increasing in regard to Patents, employment, privacy and contracts with having some form a legal knowledge of importance in any form in a management role. Best of luck.

    Spamming can be counterproductive.

One email to the practice would be enough

In larger firms there may be a managing partner

In smaller firms, one of the principals

    Good luck
