Comprehensive Car Insurance for Rental Car in the UK

Hi, apologies if this has been covered before but I’m finding it difficult to get information on this. Basically I want to hire a car in the UK, the terms with most rental companies offers a damage waiver with an excess of £1 to £1.5k. From what I’ve seen its cheaper to take out a policy with a third party for around £40 to cover this excess in the event of damage.
My question is, is this damage waiver essentially third party insurance? What happens if I have an accident and I’m at fault? Ie hitting the ditch etc.
Is it possible to obtain comprehensive insurance on a rented car so that I’m fully covered and if so would anyone recommend a suitible insurer please?
I would really appreciate any info

Excess with rental company applies in most cases to any kind of damage, no matter who is at fault.
By purchasing an excess cover from third party insurer, you are insuring your excess, so if you will have to pay this excess to the renter (because car is damaged), then this third party insurer will refund excess to you.

Any car hire company will sell you insurance for the excess. but at a high daily rate. The best plan is something like this

Oh right, that's great I'll just organise the excess cover and i'm sorted.
    Thanks a million.
