So I've come looking for some boardsie help once again and as per the title I've never had to do anything like this before & I just wondered the do's & dont's of a breakers yard to avoid looking like a pleb & hopefully not getting ripped off.Just to say im early 20's and have gotten my first car

I've a few bits to get namely
    -hub caps (x4)
-parcel shelf (preferably just the strings but i'd be lucky to get that!)
    -maybe an interior reading light

Any advice on what to expect is greatly appreciated in terms of price range & how to go about the process.
    Thanks!

hubcaps can be sourced from motor factor and are new ,getting a set of 4 in scrapyard? need to size of rim 13 - 20 ?

parcel shelf complete in scrapyard, main dealers should do strings/hangers.

motor factor might have accessories in lighting internally or halfords?

It depends on the breakers yard. Some have a waiting room where you place an order and they go get it for you. Another one pointed at a bucket of tools and waived in the general direction of the cars.

Best thing to do is call them and ask if they have the parts, get a quote and arrange a time to call up and collect the parts.

BTW 'protocol' might be a more appropriate word than etiquette. Only joking.

Just to be a pain- at a dealers do they usually have a garage type setup I can go and ask? Or just walk inside?

I'll be taking a look at the inside of the reading light tomorrow seems to have blown or fused or something as light (& rocker switch) wont stay in one position and doesnt make that satisfying click!

    Thanks for your help!

If you're looking for model specific parts then a scrapyard is the place to go.

main dealers should have a parts department and you will need reg of vehicle or chassis code if been an import or older car,i thought you were looking for an extra light for reading but if in vehicle scrapyard would be best as said, whole unit item,if no click plastic may have melted or broke off.

I used to love browsing the dismantlers yard in Kilcock years ago, went over last year for a small piece of plastic trim... not much browsing left.

Might be worth having a look on adverts too. You could find somebody close by who is breaking a similar car. Should be less hassle than a breakers.

Unless the car is pre 1987 you'll be advised to call them wheel trims (
-hub caps (x4) to avoid looking like a pleb as you say.;)

Have you tried partfinder.ie ? It will filter out the breakers that have your car in stock then you can call them and many will post to you.

It's a website that a lot of breakers use to advertise.
