Value per 1000 miles

    Just about to pass 200,000 miles in my BMW e90 320d.

    This car cost me about 7500 a few years ago and have clocked up 60k miles on the car with no issues bar servicing (every 10k miles).

    To date, this is probably the most value I've gotten from a car. The car still is pristine and no nasty rattles or squeeks.

    Despite how carefully I kept all my cars, I think this car has given me the best value per 1000 miles, in terms of both initial cost and follow up maintenance.

    People have often commented about the cost of owning a BMW, and I often point out that their fiesta/golf/Toyota probably cost multiples of my car.

    What car has given you the best value?

    Got my BMW e39 525d in January 2014 and have put 43,000 miles on it since (it's at 234,000 now)
    I paid 2250 for it and have spent about 3,500 in maintenance with nearly all work DIY.

    What car has given you the best value?
    Must be the current one, an 18-year old Honda Civic 1.5. Over 3 years since the adoption. The total ownership cost works out at €0.16 per km, and that is including all expenses - fuel, insurance, tax, NCT, service, depreciation, etc.

    Bought a 00 Volvo S40 1.8 petrol for 800 Euro 18 months ago. It has racked up 14,000 miles without a bother. Only costs to date are 2 shocks for the NCT, minor maintenance and a set of tyres. Car has 123,000 miles on it now. Great bangernomics. Cruise control, Climate control, leather seats and all. Ok, boring enough to drive, but while I'm studying to change career, it's perfect.

    If I was doing your low mileage, I'd prob get something more fun too! :-)

    I'd be very tempted to upgrade but can't fault the bimmer so far.

    my 02 corolla is the only car I've owned. spent about 2k on it a bit over a yr ago. have done about 20k miles since then. 70 euro on a pair of part worn continentals. 50 euro on an ignition coil. 10 on a relay. 200 on alloys but obviously not an essential cost.less than 200 on service items.

    edit: just remembered I replaced the front discs, so maybe less than 300 on service items.

    Bought a Nissan Primera for €290 in March of last year with 366,000miles on it. Put about €300 into it for basic servicing and parts (ABS sensor and thermostat). Other than that I just put diesel in it and drove. Put 8000miles on it before the gearbox blew up and then sold it for €275. I think that's about as cheap as it gets:)

    Bought a 2.4 diesel 156 Sportwagon last year, paid €1200 for it. In good shape mechanically and it was taxed and tested. Drove for three months, put a wishbone a radiator and an oil change, about €450, and sold it for €1900.

    Wasn't intentional to sell for more, that's just how it happened. More or less free motoring....

    Edit: should have mentioned I did 6k miles in that time too.

    My wife's Focus 1.4 has to be a contender. Jan '05 model. Bought it in Aug '08 for €7,500 with 89K kms on it.

    Apart from regular servicing, a timing belt kit in 2010 and new battery in 2013 it needed nothing until the last year. Which has been starter motor, brake pads all round, front shocks/springs/droplinks/wishbone bushings and anti roll bar bushings. And a new battery and pipework for the power steering plus rear wheel bearings.

    Everything else is original and car currently has 300k kms.
