Tinting - does it work to keep sun off baby ?

    Hi,

We have had a recent addition taking up residence in the back seat and he doesn't like the sun :)

I'm considering tinting the back windows but not really sure if it would help much or even how much it would cost to get it done properly.

Anyone any advice/experience ? Just to be clear the main reason would be to keep the sun out so we don't have to put up one of those stick on sun shades.

    Thanks!

I think so, it's more efficient than using sun blinds as rarely will you get one that covers the entire window.

There was a pretty stupid discussion on this a year or two back and there were people thinking that babies and toddlers had the ability to adjust their positions themselves to avoid the sun, put sun glasses on, adjust the sun blinds or remove clothing themselves so that tinting was unnecessary.

My wife's car doesn't have rear tints and we often get complaints about being too hot or the sun is in their eyes, but never in the car with the rear tints.

When our kids were younger my wife had the rear windows and back screen tinted. It helped a lot. I would recommend doing it. I cant remember the name of the place here in LK but the job was perfect. She also had the front side windows tinted but not as dark as the rears.

Thanks for the replies so far, sounds positive.

If anyone has any recommendations for places in Cork that would be great (maybe by PM if not on here).

A quick Google shows up a couple of options but don't know anything about any of them!

I wouldn't take my kid out off the sun considering how little we actually have a chance to see it.
A little bit of sun can only do good to him/her. Lot's of vitamin D.

Get a dark tint, maybe 50 or 60% the kids will be able to see out fine but it will cut out a lot of the glare from the sun. A light tint will be effectively useless

In fairness I think there is a difference between being out in the fresh air and sunlight v's being strapped into a baby seat with direct sun shining on you and not being able to shift your own position.

Would you happily sit strapped into a green house, without the ability to take off clothing as you need, tell someone you need water, or get yourself a pair of shades, in the splitting sun ? It's a pretty stupid point you're making.

    www.solargardireland.com have been recommended before.

If you don't care about it being pretty you can even do it yourself.

Definitely recommend getting the rears tinted for kids - noticeably cooler in the back, when it's sunny, with tints.

Probably also need a stick on blind of some sort for the first while. Tints block a good bit of the sun, but direct sunshine can still be uncomfortable for very young children until they know to get out of it's way.

20% tint would be my recommendation - enough to keep it darkish / cool in the rear, but not too dark to see out of when the sun goes down.

Skin that is exposed to sunshine though a glass window will not produce vitamin D.

Have you the windows taken out of the car entirely?

In the same boat as the OP and was considering getting the windows tinted in the Mrs's car. I think I'll go for it now.

Can anyone recommend someone to do around the Limerick area?

Sleekfx was where we got it done. They were very good.

Another option are the fitted shades. I have them on mine and the Mrs car. Handy as you can pop them out at night / during the winter. :-)

Not that much cheaper than tint, but an option.

The big advantage of these shades is you can remove them in low lighting conditons which makes reversing in the evening/night much safer. I have tinted windows in the rear side and rear window which is great for keeping sun off kids and doesn't obstruct vision on bright sunny days. However, its a pain in low light conditions as its like reversing a van but without the enlarged external mirrors.

Same boat as you OP. Baby due in May so I'm actually getting the tint applied to the back windows of my wifes Honda CRV this week. Costing me 130 quid here in Galway which isn't too bad. Was looking at doing it myself but its a fairly tricky looking job to do it right so I'm happy to spend the money for a proper job. Won't be able to open the rear windows or use the heated rear window de-mister for 3/4 days until the glue sets fully.

I bought a Mazda 6 last year and it happened to have tinted windows in the back.

If it hadn't had it Id have been in your shoes thinkin is it worth it? Does it work? Etc..

i can't stand those Disney or whatever branded net yolks that people stick to their windows. They look ridiculous. They don't cover the full window and ineveitably fall off after time.

So yes I highly endorse tinted back windows for the reasons above.
They work way better than the net yolks and look pretty good imo.

Had tints in mine and it still annoyed baby.
Best thing I got was the autoshade blinds which really darken the inside of the car completely and they fit perfectly.

Theres' 2 types,,,one for square windows and one for curved windows (curved doors etc).

Quote from Solarguard is €200 so going to try call out there in next day or so and see levels of tint etc. They seem to be the guys recommended most in Cork.

Will update once I get it sorted and let people know how it works out!

Does the outside flap around when you are driving?

Just an update on this, got it done yesterday with SolarGard. There are still quite a few 'bubbles' in it but apparently these work themselves out in a few weeks. Looks well I think but haven't had a chance to test with sun yet :)

Cost was €200...only complaint is when I went to pay I got the ... 'oh you are paying by card, I'll have to add the VAT so'...I HATE that crap, when I asked for the initial quote it was obvious I was a private person and not a business so why quote me ex-VAT prices. At €200 I would consider it expensive enough based on other places quoting prices online in Dublin but hopefully worth it!

Cheeky git, hope you report him for tax evasion/vat fraud.

The rear of the wifes car is tinted, where as mine is not, the big difference with the temperature as well as the sun not getting in their faces, granted mine are 4+, bit they are still strapped into seats. Make sure you get tinting that has UV protection with it.

They pulled the same crap with me when I had the windows done 2 years ago. Im not sure but I think in the end I got €20 off for paying in cash in the end. The bubbles come out, I was worried about them too when I first got them. You can use a credit card or similar to push the bubbles out if you want to hurry up the process.

Depends if they're air bubbles or water.... if its air, they won't come out.
