    Expertise please! Is the bright star just above and to the right of the moon Venus or Aldebaran? (Or something else entirely?)

    Yep. Mars is always naked eye visible if it's above the horizon. Should have been below and to the North of the Moon and Venus, with Venus roughly at the mid point of the three.
