Bidding on something 5 minutes ago. At the last 8 seconds was outbid and when I tried to increase my bid i was redirected to the log in screen. Probably done me a big favour as I wasn't sure about buying it but still this shouldn't happen in a live auction.

When you logged in before your first bid, did you tick the box saying to stay signed in?

Yes it was within a time frame of 5-7 minutes of logging in bidding and then getting logged out this happened. I'm delighted it did as looking back on it now I kinda bid too much than I wanted and who knows how much he/she was willing to pay and how much more I would have had to bid. But imagine if it was something you really wanted to buy or it was your item up for sale and you missed out another bid.

Lucky this happened to me yes :) but it could be unlucky for some bidders. From now on I'm going to record the auctions with Microsoft Expressions just in case this ever happens to me again.

Ebay bidding works on a proxy bidding system, like those films you see with a guy bidding on behalf of someone, by proxy. So you tell your friend/agent to bid a max of €1000 on an item, if it sells for €1001 you cannot blame your friend, you told him the max was €1000 so he acted correctly, if you were really willing to pay 1001 you should have told him such. Of course you do not expect him to go in and bid 1000 right away, and ebay does not do this either.

Ebays advice is to do the same, they tell you to put in your TRUE maximum bid, if you do then you should have no issue with being outbid in the last few seconds. Too many people treat ebay like a normal auction and not what it is -a proxy auction. People think if they put in a high bid they are going to have to pay that.

If I am in an auction on ebay I will usually use sniping software, which puts your bid in during the last few seconds. This gives you the best chance of getting it at the lowest price you are willing to pay. People will not have time to reconsider their TRUE maximum bid and create a bidding war.

Sniping software also allows control over several auctions without you being online, so if you win auction A it will not even bid on auction B

What sniping software do you use?
