How to check idle air control valve

Having an issue with the idling being very poor on my mk1 focus 1.4L petrol engine, is there any easy way to check if the idle air control valve is working correctly ? Basically car is having an intermittant misfire when idling only. The misfire is completely non-present under load. Just thinking could the idle air valve be responsible for not providing adequate air for combustion ? and thus showing as a misfire

I have given it a quick clean with carb cleaner, but is there any way to actually check its functioning ?

One way might be to run the engine and disconnect the electrical plug on the valve and see if things improve or otherwise.
