My doctor told me to slap on loads of sun screen when going out factor 50 but I was told there is no real difference between 30 and 50 so what are you chaps using .

I use the baby one. Seriously. If it's good enough for a baby it's good enough for me. Not a sun-worshipper.

The most important thing for me is to get the "all day"/"no sweat"/"sports" variety. Factor 500 is no good if it all drips off you after 30 minutes, it will probably also sting like a bitch when everything from your head relocates on to your eyeballs.

Factor 50 oil that dries really well. La Roche Posay as far as I know. Very comfortable to wear even with a good sweat on

Are you in Turkey or Dublin? The benefits of Vitamin D would probably outweight sunburn risk in Eire today...

When I cycle in hot sunny climates I always cover up as much as possible,
long sleeve(very light base layer, very light buff for neck and sun screen exposed areas but pay particular attention to ears, nose. Calves are a common area to get burned as well. My primary prevention is to stay out of sun for the 3hrs or so it is highest and its intensity strongest

Sunscreen containing Titanium dioxide as a UV blocker has been recommended to me by a pharmacist before.

Tip: don't put suncream on your forehead.. Wear a cap instead.

    There's Riemann P20 -
    http://www.boots.ie/en/Riemann-P20-Once-A-Day-Sun-Protection-Spray-SPF50-200ml_1316172/

Also this stuff from Banana Boat:-
    http://www.boots.ie/en/Banana-Boat-Quick-Dry-Sport-Spray-SPF30_1041063/

They may not (probably won't) actually last all day but they will do better than non-sport formulations.

Boots Soltan Factor 30 kids rapid cover. Goes on clear, absorbs fast, no sticky residue, gets me through a 300km audax. What's not to like?

I buy it when it's on special offer. I can also recommend the lipstick style tubes of Factor 30 as a lip protector. I carry a small tube if suncream around with me for all day events.

Surely no one's getting sunburnt at this time of year?

I got sunburnt in Carlow today. The usual stupid cyclist sunburn I might add, thin line on arms between arm warmers and gloves, nose, and from above socks to below knee warmers.

I look like a barber's pole. Don't underestimate the sense of humour of the Irish sun, even in March.

The cited benefits of Titanium are overrated. Steel (dioxide) is just as springy and only a little heavier...

I have pink knees and back of calves from yesterday. Sunscreen time! I use boots Soltan Once spf50. It's the cheapest 5* one rated for uva and uvb.

We got factor50 in Aldi last year for the little miss Carawaysticks and they'd no burn after once a day and swimming etc in Catalonia.

Not for the forehead though, can concur with Lapierre there...

You don't need to get sunburnt to get skin cancer, which incidentally is the only completely preventable form of cancer.

TIP: Out in the sun --> Wear sun cream on any exposed skin.

There are many forms of skin cancer, not all are from uv exposure, so sunscreen will not prevent them all.
