    Hi,

I'm looking for some information regarding what the going rate is for experienced tradesman.
I have just moved back to Ireland so I've been out of the loop and cant seem to find good info.
(I know things are still not great but I have secured contracts) We would carry out work in the retail and residential sector. These would be full time employees with an annual salary paid monthly. But also what would they realistically expect per hour.

I am looking to employ the following:
    Maintenance Technician
Fully Qualified Electrician with at least 3-5 years experience
Should be willing to carry out general property maintenance also

    Maintenance Technician
Fully Qualified Plumber with at least 3-5 years experience
Should be willing to carry out general property maintenance also

    Maintenance Technicians
Handyman/woman that has experience in a variety of trades, ideally plastering, painting & decorating, landscaping etc

    Hi there

I can give you an idea of what the rates are in these areas in relation to what iv gotten . Iv worked for a number of companies as a maintenance technician since 2007 , I'm a qualified electrician with almost ten years post apprenticeship experience .

The problem i have with some of these companies is that they employ an electrician but use the title of maintenance to get away from paying a fair wage /rate . i know companies paying salaries of as little as 27000 a year .

if you want a trades qualified reliable electrician be open from day one . agree that the person will take on work thats not electrical also and i would say an annual salary of 39000 to 41000 is a very decent fair wage . this would be an hourly rate of 20 odd euro an hour over a 40 hour week . This is what a tradesman should get . too many companies in this country have taken the recession as an excuse to get lads in on cut price wages . The tide is turning though and work is increasing . The maintenance sector is a growing industry and not one covered by rates .

In terms of covering a good handy man with plastering/painting / landscaping experience , they are three trades your looking for . ideally a good plasterer can paint ! but both ar an art form in themselves . The companies i worked for hired poor painters and that showed up . So the rule 'you get what you pay for stands up here `! '

But good luck with your business ! its a booming area as you will see with the amount of companies setting up and on the road !

if you want to pm any questions you have or anything you can !

    :D

    Thanks for the feedback,

I was expecting it to be around this.
Pretty soul destroying to be working for 27,000 and fully qualified, but I suppose people would need to pay the bills.

Another concern I have is the attitude a fully qualified tradie may have when asked to carry out work that isn't mechanical. In my experience, even with full disclosure at the start, they still have issues with this further into the job, even at being paid at a higher rate. Has that attitude changed over the last few years?

I also cant post private message, not enough points yet

    Thanks

The attitude will all depend on who you hire at the time ! If someone offered me 40000 a year and said the odd time you may have to clean AHU filters or change a lock on a door , i would of snapped their hand off!

I have worked wit people who had the attitude that they only do their job and had no flexibility . This doesn't work in a team , especially a small team starting off . make it clear from the start that your looking for this type of person for this role . An experienced maintenance technician / electrician will be aware of this having worked in this role before . Put this in the job description . Listen out for that sentence ' Thats not my job " and avoid these people !!
