Going on a weekend away with lads tomorrow, I'm taking the place of one of the lads who has pulled out a last minute.

I will be arriving before the rest of them tomorrow morning, will I be able to check into the room under the guys name who pulled out if I explain the situation to them?

Very unlikely. Whoever made the booking should of contacted the hotel in advance to change the name, if the booking permits changes at all.

Disagree - why would the hotel care? It might get slightly complicated but it really depends on whether the OP is substituting for the person who made the actual booking or one of the party.

If you book hotel room(s), there's normally just one name on the booking because the hotel doesn't care about the guests' names until they check in. When you arrive, they ask for a credit card for each room so the OP arrives, says he's with the (e.g.) 'James Murphy' party and wants one of the rooms, they swipe his CC and give him a room key.

Whenever I check in they always ask for a credit card and photo ID. I guess in case of damages or something? I don't know.

reception staff will see the difference,

turn up, be a good guest (explain the anomaly) and you won't have a problem,

    Photo ID? In which country?

The credit card covers them in the case of damage or you emptying the minibar or racking up a big bill in the bar. What good is your photo to them?

Thanks for the replies lads, I'm substituting one of the party not the person who booked. Hopefully it will be grand something will be sorted anyway.

The US. Always asked, everywhere I stay. I suppose to verify that you're the person who booked the room?

Do you have a confirmation number, or a booking reference number? Get that from who ever made the booking. The hotel may let you check in as long as you know that, or they may not let you check in, unless you are with the person who made the booking, or he gives them a ring and adds your name to the booking. It's hard to tell really, as all hotels do not all have identical policies on things like this. If it were me, I'd give the hotel itself a ring, instead of just turning up in the morning and maybe having to sit in the lobby for hours, waiting for the rest of your friends to arrive.

You will be fine if you arrive with the person who made the booking but I doubt they will let you check in yourself without the person who made the booking if your name is not on it, which it isn't.

Are multiple rooms booked and did the person who made the booking supply a name for each room or is there just so many rooms booked in one name?

I can't really see how there will be a problem if your friend booked multiple rooms in his name. You just show up and say you're the first of his party. If it's a big hotel then ProudDub is probably right in that the booking reference would be good to have. Tell them the rest of the gang will be along later, they ask you for your credit card, they will swipe it and hand you a room key.
