    Hi all,

Sky have announced today more price increases in the UK which means not too long for us in Ireland. I have had it. When it happens I will happily get out of my contract. My question us what are good alternatives in terms of ditching sky and Upc. Can anyone suggest what type of satellite boxes I can get for a one off payment? I'm open to any box the more channels the better :) I have obviously heard of saorview but wudnt be interested in the measly number of channels. What about other satellite boxes I have heard of a dreambox etc but wudnt know the first thing about them. Any replies/pms appreciated greatly :)

You could opt for a combo box
Satellite and saorview in one box with 1 remote
Many models to choose from with a big price difference depending on how much you want to spend
twin tuner (1 sat + 1 Terrestial ) go for around the €80 mark like the ferguson ariva
Triple tuners 2 sat + 1 terrestial like the amiko alien or sab triplex around €150
The edision triple tuner has a faster processor 1300mhz compared to 450mhs offers more stability when running enigma 2
    at around €250
and the dogs you know what would probably be the VU duo 2 €490

Needless to say this is just my opinion and there are lots of boxes to choose from

All these boxes can be connected directly to your sky dish without retuning
but you will need to add a saorview aerial €20 and obviously that price would be self install

Sky have already increased their prices here - prices went up in February

No need to worry till next year for the yearly increase in Sky prices.

If your into movies maybe Netflix could be a good option.

The downside to ditching Sky is that the Sky+ feature is very handy.

I would agree sky + was a handy feature and exclusive some years ago

With more boxes available now with built in hard disk sky are not the only platform on which you can pause and record live tv
as an old codger I do wish the record and play buttons on my amiko alien remote were bigger though

Humax Freesat HDR-1000S (1TB drive version) - have had it for a year now and has all the features of sky+ without the subscription.

Nah freesat can be had on any of the above mentioned boxes
    same channels can be had
Im using an amiko alien 2
I get the usual BBC 's and utv and channel 4 plus the free movie channels like movies for men and film 4 true movies and that
In all I have around 50 usable channels
Im not into sports lucky enough as I dont think there are many free
The extra money for the box comes into play with the ability to use plugins
the better the processing power of the box the better able to handle plugins like tsmedia ' ondemand 'streaming from mobile devices tablets and such like youtube and rte player
I bought this box to get rid of another bill and to be honest I have not looked back
google freesat channels and you will get an idea of what is available for free
But make no mistake if you like your sport there is not much available for free
    Hope this helps
also bear in mind that these are HD boxes and there are a good few HD channels for free
add a usb drive and you can pause and record live tv and there are also repeating timers a bit like series link at the push of a button
this coupled with a 7 day epg whats not to like

Some of the things dreamboxes can do can't be brought up here. You'll find out handy enough with a bit more research
