It says 3 years on that policy. If you had 2 years claims free on a previous policy that would add up to a total 5 years without a claim which earns you the 50% NCD.

Do I need to find the old ncb if I want to change insurance companies?

Usually not a problem The new insurer can see from this sheet that you have at least 5 years claims-free driving.
However some Insurers may request more proof of your history....but it would be usual to accept what you have pictured.

Ok so the 50% discount shows my 5 years ncb and the 3 years just means how long I'm with Fbd ?

    Not necesserily.

You could have a claim just over 3 years ago and NCB protection.
In that case, it would show up like in your statement (3 years claims free under the policy, and 50% NCB).

The certificate he attached clearly shows that his insurer only awards a 50% no claims discount to those with at least 5 years claim free driving. He has a 50% discount.
An NCB protection will only be applicable if you stay with same company. If you move to another insurer (as he did) it ceases to exist.
So he couldn't have made a claim within the past 5 years.
