I am interested in possibly working in F1 at some point, but specifically on the technical side, around IT/Software etc.

I've read things before where they say it's good to go into a lower formula and get some experience there.

Is there much of a motorsport industry here in Ireland? I would like to get some experience, even if it's just part-time and for free in the technical side of things. But I'm not sure where to start.

    Any tips/advice?

    Thanks!

I wouldn't say there are too many jobs in Ireland. Find out what systems racers use and see if you can get any experience in those systems outside of racing. I would say racing teams want to find the most experienced guys and their industry is so desirable they can probably be very picky.

As others have said not a big industry in Ireland. Even in the UK the motorsport industry is focused around the motorsport valley area in mid-England.

As ScumLord mentioned take a look at what systems are being used. ww.racestaff.com has 10 or so roles up at the moment for Software Engineers in Lotus F1.
McLaren Applied Technologies are also currently recruiting in the area of software and data analytics.

From a software/data logging/electronics point of view the easiest way to do it in Ireland is to start working in bike series. So any of the Irish Superbikes/Road Races is probably the best way to go. As noted as far as single seaters are concerned it's not really possible to do much in it here in Ireland but with bikes the use of electronics can be quite sophisticated with modern bikes and give you real hands on work to then be able to approach teams in the UK

There was a story in TheRegister.co.uk where the reporter got a behind-the-scenes look at things. Have a look at the link and, esp the comments.

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/03/12/dream_job_sysadminf1_pit_crew_member/

Seems to be very long hours, high stress & badly paid. But, if you're a fan, it's the best job in the world.

Any pointers such as companies or anything? I don't know the first thing about bike series!

Marussia used be quite prolific in advertising their jobs on both their own website and sites like monster et al. back during their better times. I used to look at it quite a lot and wished that I had tried harder at Maths and Science!

Obviously this is of little relevance to your request, but it might be a good idea (or interesting at the very least interesting) to have a look at the types of jobs that they used to offer and what the requirements were:
