I am not seeking a medical opinion but I am just wondering from people's experiences is depression something that can suddenly occur or do you have to have had it your whole life? Lately I have been very down, I don't want to commit suicide or anything but I wouldn't really care if something happened to me. I am 25 though and have never suffered from depression before

If there's one thing I've learned in my time here on the forums, is that depression is something that anybody can suffer from, at absolutely any age - one of the forum founders has posted in another forum on his own dealings with depression, to pick just one example. Thankfully I don't suffer from it to a great degree myself, but we've had people here from all walks of life who have come on to post on their feelings, looking for advice on what steps to take.

Some people can feel better simply by talking it out with a family member or friend, others feel more comfortable in the presence of strangers, or feel that they need more help than they think their friends or family can offer, and seek out professional help.

IF you are feeling depressed and you wish to talk to somebody about it, some of the links in the forum charter may well be worth considering (see the section titles 'Depression / Mental Health'). In addition, the Psychology forum has an excellent sticky thread on How to find a Counsellor/Therapist/Psychologist which can be found here.

Had it from when I was 15 on and off. Could come at any time I suppose if your susceptible. Sucks but welcome to the worst club in the world.

If you think you are depressed talking to your gp is the best first step.

    Good luck
