I got the Argos Bush 5" android smartphone on Monday for €99.50 and can't believe how good the value. The spec of it is INCORRECT in the catalogue, online and at their terminals. What you get is: 1Gb ram 8Gb memory Android Kitkat Quad core. It zips along, unbelievable. I have had samsungs and htc but this is far better. It doesnt appear to have bloatware which can slow them down. Comes with extra covers and a Bumper cover (otherwise hard to find).
Also a thick screen cover, earphones and a sim adapter. The battery life is excellent. For the first time I can get through the day without having to plug in a charger with moderate use.

Hmmmm interesting, the girlfriend's birthday is on Sunday. Does the phone have a cheap feel to it? was going to get her the HTC desire 620, but this could be a good alternative at nearly half the price.

Definately nothing cheap about the feel of it, the box also is top quality. Screen is like HD quality. At this price you nee not fret over cracking the screen or loosing it. Ok I know the BUSH name is a turn off but now I realise we have been overpaying for mobiles for years. I feared it would be an under performer at the price but I could not be happier with it. Maybe spend the money you save on a meal and et serious brownie points!!

Meh it's about what you'd expect for the price. Similar spec'd phones can be found from all the major networks at that price.

Bonus points for sim free though, saves unlocking. What are the camera & gps like?

    Edit: no front facing camera?

I'd have to agree with simi. The technology is moving on and the good processors getting cheaper all the while. I bought a Samsung Core Prime for 99 on vodaphone. It's superfast quad core , no lag at all , 4g , good sound , camera is okay 8gb of ram. Super light too. Screen has low resolution my only gripe but I got used to that so I'm ultra happy with it. And it does't look much different from from their flagship models. I never dreamt it would be as good as it turned out to be. So it seems there is now a lot of very capable phones in the 100 to 130 price range.

Is there much bloat on that, and did you get it unlocked?

    Moto E on Motorola UK

    Moto E on Argos

The new Moto E is a little more expensive, stock android and 4G - screen size slightly smaller but worth the higher price IMO.

Might suit me as I'm going on holidays next month and could leave my iphone at home. The dual sim would be great for irish & local sim.

There are one or 2 vodaphone apps but they don't affect the running of it whatsoever so I wouldn't be concerned about that. Actually the vodaphone app is quite good for connecting to your vodaphone account. The prob is no root and no unlock available. I trawl the net every so often for it I think it's gonna take a good while. I've seen it unlocked for no less that 150 so saved 50 by switching over to vodaophone. Gagging to go back to 3 though.

I have two Bush products. One is a two tuner freesat box with a harddisk , it breaks my heart ! seizes up, misses recordings etc. etc. the other product is a cd/radio which is also pretty sh*te!! I wouldn't touch another Bush product with a barge pole.

Low enough resolution. Imagine first generation moto g, is priced similar.

Has both cameras and gps worked well with maps yesterday. Main camera is only 5Mp so depends on priorities. Front facing is only 0.6 I think

I was weary of Bush name as I last saw it on a b&w tv, but some research shows its a rebadged Archos Neon 50b, so hopefully ok

Update on Argos Bush phone usage

Phone is still working perfectly. Battery life is unbelievable compared to anything I had before. After about 15hours it still has 50% left with mild usage.

Great phone ! - totally agree with the first poster. It's in the new Argos catalogue again
Covers may be a problem but have ordered one on alibaba.com for $11 with free postage as it seems to be a Archos 50b Neon phone rebranded to Bush for Argos
    Hope it lasts!

Bought this last week . 5 inch screen android 4.4 . Good screen. 8 mp / 5 mp camera. 1G ram . Perfect signal on both simms. 2 cover b&w and shock cover .For 89.99 seems like great deal so far. Looks and feels great no complaints so far.

now €89.99 was €99.95 but yeah it's low res screen

It would be nice to know who the OEM was. It might be an Archos Neon 50b or Archos 50 Neon

Any way to find that from the phone and I will let you know

We're 100% certain about this part? Not disbelieving you, OP, it just seems odd they haven't picked up on it in all this time... (it says at the bottom of the current page that it has been on offer at this price before?).

Screen resolution is woeful. The Vodafone Smart Prime 6 is the same price, with unlock codes cheap enough. You get a 720p display on the Prime 6 too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,202 ✭✭✭colossus-x

I read that the smart prime 6 has a poor quality screen. At 720p which for me is way to condensed on such a small screen does not mean the screen will look wonderful. More pixels or dots in the resolution does not mean the picture quality is better, it just might be better.

In other words a lower resolution screen can have a much better picture than a higher resolution screen.

Now it may very well be the bush phone is question has a poor screen as well in addition to a lower resolution, I don't know.

I have a samsung core prime and ppl keep dissing the screen. The resolution is low and is the only feature on the phone that makes it more budget grade for me but everything else about it is great imo. The lower resolution screen means the text will look bigger and I'm delighted with that. My sister has a sony compact and all the txt on the launcher looks tiny to me - serious eye strain. (I know you can make default text size bigger)

This review here mentions the vodafones 'Underwhelming display". It also says the screen isnt "sharp or bright". http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/vodafone-smart-prime-6-1294748/review

By the way I put lollipop on my core prime and the performance was terrible. Went back to 4.4.4 and flying with it again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 741 ✭✭✭poitinstill

They have 2 versions one with 512mb ram and 4.2. The other is definitely 1G and 4.4.

Any verdict on the Bush Spira B1 5" mobile from Argos fpr €89.95? will be for my not very tech savvy mother who's still using a Nokia 3310, so doesn't have to be a world beater by any stretch of the imagination.

New here so can't post a link unfortunately!

Get her the VF smart prime. €90. Well worth it. Only problem is she will have to charge it a lot more than once a month, as was the case with the 3310 ;)

Poor screen resolution for the size. Not much info available on it. There's a single poor review on argos.co.uk.

agree screen is not good... apart from that its fine though. its more like a s4 than a nokia so a big change for someone not used to it..I know my mother wouldnt handle the touch screen / lack of buttons well.
