Driving 2007 petrol 1.4 golf past 5 years...now 122K miles on it..timing belt due to be changed & tax up end of month....was thinking of upgrading to 11 golf 1.6 diesel but a bit outside price range..quoting 14K giving me 4.5K for mine net 9.5K ...what other cars would be similar to the golf & more affordable....
also I got timing belt done at 60K miles now at 122K ...how long more will I get or am I mad?

9.5k to go up 4 years from a petrol Golf to a diesel Golf is not a bad cost to change price. Have a look at the likes of the Seat Leon and Skoda Octavia, both are cheaper versions of the Golf with the same engines.

Also nobody here can tell you how long your timing belt will last, its made of rubber and wears with time as well as mileage. The recommended change on that engine is every 60k miles or 5 years, whichever comes first afaik.

If your heart is set on the golf maybe look into 2010 model instead so as to suit budget. If you're after a 2011 then an octavia might be a good option although the price difference between them is narrowing as the octavia gets more popular. Why the change to the diesel... What kind of mileage do you do and what type of driving?

I do about 25-30k per annum ... Doesn't bother me about diesel but most golfs I saw advertised seem to be diesel ... Did the petrol model fall out of favour around 2010-11 ?

From 2008 onwards because of the changes to motor tax most people went out and bought diesels as they were cheaper to tax.

Now they've started to come back with the 1.2TSi petrol...

Provided your mileage is not made up of loads of really short journeys you probably could justify a diesel. 9.5k is very good to go up 4 years and to a diesel. My missus went from an 08 petrol golf to a 12 diesel golf last year and cost her around 13k. Her petrol golf was a very basic model and the new one is a match model which has a nice few extras but it sounds expensive now compared to your quote!
