I've always used Pixie as I like the simple layout and the local community feel you got with it but it hasn't had proper support for a long time now and today of all days it is down and I may have to finally move along...
flickr vs 500px which would you recommend and what are their strengths and weaknesses and like by like which is best?
    and anything else including premium/pricing

I'd start with Flickr - its free - also, has some excellent communities , especially street stuff - obviously , lacks the local community of pix.ie.

Flickr and pixie are my favourite sites , if you join contact me at :-

Flickr is great if you're into anything even remotely esoteric. Chances are there's a group of people who have done it already. If not, you can create one, and you'll attract others. That aspect of it alone makes it worthwhile. I actually created a 500px account back in the day https://500px.com/dairequinlan but gradually stopped looking at it. Stuck with flickr.

I have used Flickr too but filled up the limited free capacity. Seemed OK but have not paid for their services. It used to be a lot more fussy than Pix.ie but they seem to have improved their interface over time.

The one downside of Flickr for use here is that it doesn't seem to give an option of 800 pixels image size easily. If you upload it already sized then it's OK. Not being a regular there I may have missed a preference or something.

Flickr now gives 1TB of space on your account for free, which is quite generous.
Also when selecting the link to copy an image on their page, there are numerous size options to choose from, including 800 pixels on the longest side.

Look's like I'll set up a flickr sometime this week, pity as I really liked Pixie but you have to have reliability and support.
