Mmmmmm not really fair to call it nonsense. I'm in a very privileged position whereby I can buy a Switch and I currently have a PS4, so even if Nintendo don't get 3rd party support, I won't miss out, but if I want to play Nintendo games & other AAA titles, GTA, Dark Souls III, Skyrim etc, I have to buy two consoles? Absolute nonsense. Nintendo aren't the special one who can support a console entirely on their own IP (see wii u for confirmation of that) because they can't bring games out fast enough. To make the call that Nintendo don't need 3rd party support is pure nonsense. Sony and Microsoft couldn't have a successful console based on first party titles and just because Nintendo have, Mario, Zelda, Metroid etc (of which they come out once a console at the most) doesn't mean they can. The Wii U is dead because Nintendo didn't

    1. Market it properly
    2. Made it so underpowered it wasn't worth developer time
    3. Didn't have 3rd party support because of point 2

    The switch needs

    1. To be marketed properly
    2. Needs to be powerful enough to be worth developer time
    3. Needs 3rd party support for longer than 6 months.
    4. A steady release of games. Droughts aside from the usual summer drought are not acceptable.

Can be applied to all three consoles and PC. I have an XBOX/PC/WiiU and I want to play TLOU? What bollocks, these companies should cater to me and release all the games on my chosen console.

Nintendo really don't *need* third party support, they have what, 20% of the 8th Gen market for consoles, and over 80% of handhelds.

Given they can capture this market share from people who are primarily expecting first party games I think it says the opposite about their need for third party games, the PS4 and XBOX need third party games, Sony wouldn't ship 15million PS4s on the backs of Bloodborne and TLOU, MS the same with Forza, Gears or Halo. They need COD, FIFA, GTA and numerous other companies to ship their consoles for them.

I don't think people have been looking to Nintendo to give them their AAA goodies since the GameCube, had the Wii a steady stream of AAAs? No, but it sold like mad and had easily some of the best gaming experiences of last generation, WiiU was a marketing mess, as someone who's interested in games and all things gaming, it totally passed me by for years. It still has some of the best games of this generation, debatably beaten out by a few cross-platform games and TLOU.

Nintendo can, imo, support a console on their first party games. How many people are jumping to PC because the PS4 and XBOX were just beefed up from last gen, and the Scorpio and PS4 Pro are just showing that all they want to do is give the same games at higher settings. As we go forward a few years, at the current rate PS4 and XBOX will be near identical and release a handful of exclusives to set them apart, PC similarly with an infinite amount of indies to give something different from the other two. Nintendo will hopefully be way out on their own selling unique experiences to stand out from the rest, as they do now.

    Are you being serious?
I'm currently looking at 7 consoles by the TV and that's just in the living room.

I have at least 10 consoles, but that's not the point. Not everyone can afford to buy two or more machines it's naive to think they can. And even if someone could doesn't mean they want to. The guy or girl who just wants to throw on a video game and play for a few hours after a day at work doesn't usually want to have two consoles under their TV & Nintendo don't get to decide that's how it should work. The point I'm making is Nintendo are massive and a fantastic company but they aren't the holy grail who can work without support from 3rd parties. Would you buy a PS4 or Xbox One if all you could play is first party games? Seriously would you?

Have people pre ordered the Switch online? I'm going through the process of pre ordering through GameStop.ie using PayPal and it looks like I'll be paying €500 straight away.
That price is a placeholder no doubt but I still don't want the charge/hold in my account. What's this I'm hearing of a €5 charge? Is that just in store?

Click on the collect option at checkout and you only have to pay €5. Pick a store closest to you.

How big of an SSD is realistic to keep the total cost at 300?

Desktop SSDs are 20-30c a GB, I think NAND flash is cheaper but I'm not up on the details of the hardware in either.

If they got to 120gb or so that'd be swell I think, think Mario Galaxy on Wii was 4gb or so, Bayonetta is probably fairly big by Ninty standards and is 15gb so 120gb would give us 6-12 games installed I'd say? The nature of the cart means games won't need to be on the console so the storage will only apply to digital games.

Right first point, Sony have sold over 50 million consoles worldwide. Did they do that on first party? No. Nintendo have shipped 13.6 million Wii U consoles since launch, would they have sold more with 3rd party games? I think yes because it's a steadier stream of games. The Wii U suffered horribly because of droughts while Nintendo were working on games.

The Wii sold as many units because it was the rare console that your nan could pick up and figure it out. It didn't need many 3rd party games because a large chunk of the install base were playing Wii Sports.

Nintendo do need third party support to get a larger install base. I mean listen to yourself your claiming that they can support a console on their own games alone when they saw fit to drop the Wii U like a hot potato barely 4 years in? Do you think they announced the NX so early because they were doing so well, they announced it as a "okay look guys we ****ed it but we have something new". In 5 years shipping 13 million units is rubbish. That's 2.6 million units for each year of life.

I pre-ordered a PSVR last year but never collected (smart decision it appears). Will pop into GS tomorrow and move the 50 quid to a switch. Got a good feeling.

I agree with this completely and have said something similar before. I love Nintendo. Have owned every home console release.... Up to the Wii-U. I don't think it's unreasonable to look for a machine that can play Nintendo first party games AND the full range of 3rd Party games which is why I didn't buy the Wii-U.

The direction the Switch is going is interesting but ONLY if the price is right, the battery life is right and the games are right. I don't want to have to choose between a small range of excellent first party Nintendo games OR a wide range of excellent games from multiple parties on a well-supported system.

I HOPE it's a success and that Nintendo don't go down the shovelware they did with the Wii. I can't wait to see the stream highlights, price, availability etc. I would love to see them having a MASSIVE success with the switch. I think it's a very hard sell. The ubiquitousness of smartphones will eat into their mobile share and if they don't get the same FULL 3rd Party support that MS/Sony get then it will be back to Wii-U sales numbers

    Ah yes
The myth that the WiiU had no 3rd party support.
It had poor EA support and poor sales, for a variety of reasons, meant that other 3rd party support waned, but it did have plenty of support til then by both Ubisoft and Activision.
And it far better exclusives than the other current gen consoles combined.

The idea that a home should have more than one console, I think it is extremely common.
Why, the PS3 and 360 lived side by side with the Wii in most houses.
And most homes with a home console is likely to have a Nintendo handheld as well.
So, the presence of a Switch sharing a living room with a PS or Xbox is very likely indeed.
And I've little doubt it'll have ample 3rd party support.

Did you even read past my first point?

Realistically, Ninty absolutely ****ed the dog with the WiiU, marketing was a total nightmare and they had no third party support, and they sold way less units than either compediting console and still got a reasonable market share based on the strength of their first party games, releasing most of the generations best games.

Look past the sales, look at the games, console wise Ninty wins every time. Bigger games like Dark Souls, RDR, GTA would be class on Switch but ultimately I think the console will do fine without them, it's also going to be getting the 3DS library of Pokemon, Phoenix Wright, Monster Hunter, Fire Emblem, Prof Layton. These are the games that sold 60 million 3DS consoles, and will be one of the major draws towards the Switch for a lot of people.

They do them all the time, just only at select ones and not for Nintendo games very often.

So, in order to have a midnight launch I'll have to be creative with my local branch of Smyth's...

If you hear of a break-in at 00:01 in Smyth's of Airside it's nothing.... Honest...

What I would like to see tonight:

A console more powerful than the Wii U.
A good number of games for local multiplayer.
    Good launch line-up.
    Quality feel to the console.
An account system similar to the ones on Xbox or PS.

As you can see my needs aren't very high so anything else will be a bonus.

I never pulled the trigger on the Wii U and it's been a couple of years since I last bought any tech/gadget/console. A new toy is long overdue!

Got an email from Amazon offering pre-orders for the Switch available from 7am tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,528 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Have to admit, they're really going all out on this. We have this presentation followed by treehouse, press events, hands on events, seemingly organised preorders and for a company that was strict on streaming they're allowing people to co-stream the presentation.
Will be interesting to see how much is given in the press packets.

Got my Gamestop preorder in 24th Dec 2016. Still worried thats not early enough. Seems like it going be shortages again. Sorry i didnt Preordered smyths months ago instore.

    jss.png

4chan rumors are interesting.... and back up the jori Fighting stick accessory..... ULTRA STREET FIGHTER 2!!! This and Super BomberMan Switch would be simply yet super fun way to show off 2 & 4 player local multiplayer capabilities of the Switch... That might yet be the killer feature... 1 owner shows casual cool mulitplayer as urs 2 controllers 1 system and then casuals go out and buy one.

Get Wii casuals back and then large console base then 3rd party is all but assured.... New mario odyssey title too...?

Everywhere seems to be talking low launch allocations. I hope its not true though, doesn't seem like a great start.

Nintendo probably got stuck with allot of unsold Wii U's so they are taking a very conservatory approach to stock levels I think 2 million have been made divided that up between the main gaming markets Ireland and even UK ain't going to get much

I don't think the new 3D Mario shown in the debut trailer will be a launch game. Think it will be a Q4 release.

The 2 big launch games will be Zelda and the Mario kart 8 port.

The new Splatoon will come out in the summer.

Those are my predictions for game releases on the switch. I could be way off the mark but we'll find out in a few hours :D

Zelda supposedly won't make launch for EU, due to delays with localization. :(
