The idea of these threads is to give some insight as to how some of your fellow photographers operate. Each person invited will write about their photography and provide some examples. This thread will be sticky for about a fortnight (longer if needed) During this time feel free to comment and ask questions. Please allow the subject to answer questions and do not do so on their behalf. While this process is taking place, the subject will approach the next person to be highlighted. Please keep this secret and do not prompt. All normal site and forum rules apply.

Firstly I like to say how chuffed I am to be asked to do this and terrified. I suspect Myksyk is mixing me up with someone else.
Writing about myself is as far outside my comfort zone as it's possible to be and given my writing skills are pretty crap I'll probably make a bags of it, so here goes.
I'm Mick Whelan and I'm from Palmerstown in west Dublin, married, way past middle aged and slowly loosing what few brain cells I started with.
My interest in photography started a long time ago, long before digital. My first camera was a an old manual Minolta SRT 102 35mm. I still have boxes of photos and slides buried around the house somewhere. Over the years I sort of lost interest, except for family snaps.
In 2011 while I was out of work, I had to do something to save my sanity so I started taking photos again with a little Olympus point and shoot. My first DSLR was a second hand Canon 10D, at the moment I'm using a Canon 5D. I have a small collection of lens but my favourite is the Canon 17-40L.

    My first post:

I love digital, I love being able to mess around with a photo after it's been taken. OK, at times I go overboard but what the heck.
I don't have any set style but I do like a bit of drama in my photos. I photograph what interests me and then process it until I come up with something that I like. Most of my shots are of landscapes, because frankly, I suck at taking portraits and sports doesn't interest me.
I've never joined a camera club, I keep threatening to, but somehow never actually got around to doing it.

I joined Boards in 2011 and it's been great. I love the variety and quality of the photos posted here.
Over the years I had been lucky enough to achieve a few POTW's, for which, my sincere thanks boardsies.

Most of the time I have an image or type of photo in mind before I go out, and I go to where I think it will work for me.
I love taking landscapes, getting out early in the morning it feels like you're the only one on the planet. It's definitely the "off" switch for my brain.
Most of the locations I check out on Google Earth and The Photographers Ephemeris.

This one caused a bit of controversy, unfortunately I was working away from home at the time and missed it. All I can say is that it meets all the criteria of of the random thread.

Like a golfer searching for the perfect round, I'm still searching for the perfect photo. Long may the search last, I'm enjoying every minute of it.

You have some cracking images and seem to have a great skill set for post processing too. You were very encouraging to me on here and on Flickr when I started out a couple of years ago and it was a great pleasure to finally meet you at a boards meet up for sunrise in Howth a few weeks back.

You feature regularly in the POTW because you produce images that are memorable and that people enjoy. Long may it continue.

    Thank you Mick.

That is a really nice body of work you have there, but it's also great to get a feel for the person behind the camera.

What was the controversy about the moon rise image?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 677 ✭✭✭Loki98

The size of the moon on a wideangle lens was tiny so I 'shopped in a photo I'd taken with a 300mm lens. Some people took exception to it.

Looking at that image I had assumed the moon was dropped in. Suits the image.

Great work Mick, have to say I love seeing your photos and the journey they have taken over the last few years.

Really enjoy your processing too on your landscapes and the drama, vibrancy and feel to each of your images.

    Keep them coming.
